How Can a Commercial Plane Run Out of Fuel in the Sky?

So what could have led to this? Something is not adding up

A Kenya Airways plane with 38 passengers on board from Delhi, India had to make an emergency landing at Moi International Airport in Mombasa Monday after running out of fuel.

The plane was set to land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport but had to be diverted to Mombasa.

Moi International Airport manager Mr Yatich Kangogo said the plane landed safely at 12.07 pm.

He said the plane was from Indira Gandhi Airport in Delhi, India and run out of fuel. He said it was diverted to Mombasa as it is nearer than JKIA.

"The aircraft developed low fuel mid-air with its reserves unable to cover the Nairobi distance so it was diverted here to refuel," Mr Kangogo said.

He said all the passengers on board of the KQ Boeing 737-800 plane are safe.

Maybe the fuel gauge is faulty. That is really messed up.I guess they thought they can carry kibuyus so when plane stall mid-air they can rush to nearest fueling station and be back soon...to continue with journey.

May be there is a scam involving ground staff. The fuel is pre determined and billed. The KQ staff would have known what is required and ordered the same. There was once such case involving UN planes where they would fill less than they declared and then bill for more. It worked well until the regular pilots went away on emergency replaced by others who not only found the game but reviewed the computer logs versus the bills and boom!

There used to be cases of ground staff under filling the tanks because of discrepancies between Metric and other systems. It caused some disasters. I heard it was changed and made foolproof, leaving deliberate falsification. Anything is possible in India

It is scary having a jetliner flying over the Indian Ocean on FUMES. Some people must be suicidal (captain and first officer). Even if Indians are all crazy, the captain has gauges...unless the crew was not conversant with the plane and was flying into strong winds throughout the journey or was extremely overloaded. I remember getting a Mmeru in an Asian Airport carrying all his shopping from China and asking everyone to help him get it checked in! It was unbelievable that a stranger could expect another stranger to check in their luggage!
