Yes, I remember it was in 2001, when I noticed that Ruto gift and I told my friend from Eldoret - that this guy - he was 30 something then - was going far in politics. I am not suprised he is now the frontrunner for pork.
How he was able to spin KANU - which was truly unpalatable and incompetent - for folks to even give it a hearing - astounded me. Kanu was either Kamotho waxing lyrical or Kalonzo with his dry speech in good english or Biwott-Henry Kosgeys types who had trouble with both English and kiswahili.
Ruto was different...he was so convincing you could actually listen to KANU...KANU was truly terrible and had been painted as evil...
Ruto had initially given up on KANU - because Biwott held such a grip and had rejected any attempts to reform KANU - toyed with UDM with Kirwa, Jirongo and Kapten - but eventually when Moi took him in the kitchen cabinet - he went on to rebrand KANU - to KANU Fresh
- and started a Youth Agenda - that nearly handed Uhuru his victory.
He made a very persuasive argument that nearly wiped out an entire generation of leaders...for 30-40yrs old...if Raila had not say Tosha....Uhuru and Ruto and Gideon would be running gov...or whatever would have been left of it
Thank god for Raila and crew seeing the danger - and saying Kibaki Tosha.
In Kalenjin land..it certainly wiped them out a generation...KANU of 2003 were nearly all young Mps - under 40s. Many of the old guards would later comeback in 2007 with ODM before being wiped out again in 2013.
The study revealed that Ruto is able to criticize and ridicule his opponents using humour and rhetorical questions, hence portraying them as incompetent and unreliable. Consequently, he succeeds in dissuading people from voting for them. He also uses these devices to create a trustworthy image of himself and Uhuru Kenyatta and to minimize the distance between him and the audience, thus creating rapport and succeeds in persuading them to follow and vote for them.
The findings were that Ruto does not use them to seek for information from his audience but to make strong statements which in most cases were meant to mock, ridicule and criticize their opponents in the NASA coalition.
