What started a dispute between the Teachers Service Commission and the Kenya National Union of Teachers has increasingly degenerated into a major misunderstanding that is threatening to kill an organization long seen as the face of organized Labour in Kenya and a symbol of the country’s commitment to International Labour Organization Convention 98 on the right to organise and collective bargaining.
Through a series of intentional actions, the TSC has disabled and is now en route to killing KNUT.
As at today, membership of KNUT has shrunk from a high of 187,000 to 23,000. Its income has dwindled from Ksh144 million to Ksh15 million against a salary portfolio of Ksh80 million for over 600 workers spread across the country.
The teachers may have been subdued and gone silent as a monumental movement they built from scratch since 1957, and which they took pride in, is brought to its knees. But they are certainly not happy.
An unusual school year has started under circumstance made difficult by a raging pandemic, erratic syllabus coverage and upcoming national exams. All these require full dedication of the teachers.
The courts and the Parliamentary Committee on Education have pronounced themselves in concurrence loudly and clearly on this dispute, especially in the Petition Number 151 of 2018 in which the TSC was the petitioner against KNUT.
Yet as the school year begins, the old grievances remain. There is no indication that TSC will undertake a full implementation of the 2017-2021 Comprehensive Bargaining Agreement as demanded by KNUT and sanctioned by the courts and Parliament.
There are also no indications that TSC intends to pay the dues that have been denied members of KNUT.
There is equally no indication the TSC will restore KNUT’s membership register to its June 2019 status. TSC has shown no indication to gazette aagency fee for KNUT in liaison with the Ministry of Labour.
This stand-off benefits no one in the long chain of education stakeholders. It does not benefit the teachers, the TSC, the pupils or even parents. In the long run, the absence of a strong and credible teachers’ union will be extremely costly to the country, making the current efforts against KNUT deeply short sighted.
In the spirit of the difficult times the country finds itself in against the background of increasing expectation of increased surveillance in our schools and quality learning, KNUT and TSC must return to the table, go through the rulings of the court and resolutions of Parliament and begin a fresh journey of good faith that benefits all. It is increasingly clear that honesty is the missing link in the search for a solution to this dispute.
The parties don’t need to be permanently in court or at war. In fact, the courts have asked the two parties to negotiate.
On its part, TSC must appreciate its responsibility to support and protect teacher professionalism, teacher rights that include the right to belong to unions of their choice and teachers right to organize in order to check administrative power.

Ruto has been doing his job - acting as DPORK and Opposition leader.

The handshake days are nigh.

But Uhuru will manage to fool until 2020 I bet.

Raila seems not to understand that the consequences of  the handshake was him being neutralized and losing his non core base translating as Luhya and Coast . Similarly on the other side  Uhuru lost  GEMA and his other non core base Rift Valley  and North Eastern . Funny enough the reason why Uhuru and Raila entered in this unholy union was to alienate Ruto for Uhuru Politically and for Raila for 2022 reasons , now Ruto has managed to bag Luhya, Coast ,Gema ,Rift Valley and North Eastern he is more powerful politically and 2020 President designate.
Raila and Uhuru have no option that to go to default settings . This is what is happening , howver its too late.

I hate interrupting this echo chamber but I believe that in a non rigged election, Raila will beat Ruto and his Kalenjin/Kikuyu cabal of thieves. Hey guys, do not count your eggs too early, some Kikuyus are starting to wake up to their muratina stupor, I hear there is a lot of stirring especially after Kangata’s mustersroke letter. In two years, the idea of Ruto presidency will look like a horrible idea and it is a horrible idea.

You don't pick someone to be your deputy if you don't want them to succeed you. If anything happen to Uhuru - Ruto continues.
Raila would probably amount to something against kibaki or Uhuru - but against Ruto or Dan Moi - he is nothing - because those are great political animals

Raila right now is desperately trying to find his voice - he now realizes BBI is headed to dustbin

And is going to try to compete with Ruto for the opposition role :)

Urhurus game plan was simply Loot and do it to the maximum . This meant to ensure Ruto was kept some feet away from the jar and this was to be achieved by alienating him politically in such away he couldn't be felt in Government influence wise or power wise and the medicine was what Ahmednasir had written in an artricle back in 2013 and what Tony Gachoka was advocating in Jeff Koniange KTN show and that is form a cooperation with Raila .
Finally by making a deal with Raila , Raila would go mute on the looting spree and would let him rule peacefully till 2022.
Well did he achieve that ? The Jury is out there , What is evident Raila is trying to play the catch up game  one year to the election similar position he was in 2013
