Satellite is the very near future. Most telcos here - AT&T, Viacom, Verizon, etc - have acquired satellite startups last few years. Big Tech lead by Tesla, Facebook, Google all have well-oiled satellite units. 20 years ago you needed a telco mast to boost your signal for international calls or internet. That reality gave Safcom cover to rout Airtel and Telkom as local monopoly in mobile voice, data and payments.

But now it's possible to connect to satellite direct without telco network. Satellite mobile phones have come of age. As soon they stop costing an arm & a leg - there will be Starlink and Facebook simcards in Nairobi. Flat rock-bottom tariffs worldwide. Safcom will get a heart attack. It is why I laugh at Pundit here whose pension is basically Safcom stock and an indigenous tree farm in Mau. Njamba is the other fool with inherited assets in the dinosaur.

Of course poor Kenyans have put up with state capture incompetence for a full 20 years. Uber dispensed the archaic city cabs... for bundles and Youtube and Netflix - for a BOOMING DIGITAL ECONOMY- Elon Musk is your knight in shining armor.

If you want to know satellite is viable - see how Starlink internet has already doubled the value of SpaceX - from 30s to 100B usd now. And this is a private company not Wall Street greed. Investors are not yet sold on Musk's Mars and space-faring dreams - so he uses Starlink to milk cheap capital. I doubt he really cares about internet - cause it not a hard nut to crack.

Unless you're a thief enjoying impunity in 3rd world like Kenyatta and Ruto, and don't have the energy amd gray cells to hack it in business, smart investing is the path of least resistance. Just a good run or two like bitcoin and Tesla and you are set. Working 9 to 5 job - manning M-Pesa server :) - is swimming upstream.

Njamba runs a briefcase "management consulting" company - basically corporate con selling smoke - but much better than a straight up day job.

One bad move - and you could end up a pauper. That casino kind of harvesting is too risky for me.

My trees have better returns.

For example I bough this 5 acres in 2015 - for 0.5m - 50k per acre - and planted blue gum trees - and now they are about 2-3yrs from harvesting.

One tree seedling cost 10bob - then I hired someone for one year to take care of them - and now they are on they own.

one such tree will worth maybe 2-4k - so what is return on investment?

In 10yrs - it possible to transform 10 bob to 4,000. The land itself is now worth 400k per acre...from 50k an acre. If Ruto wins it could be worth even 1m soon.

It not magic obviously - it requires very solid calculation - otherwise am sure very few know the good math to invest in trees like you. But stocks are liquid and scalable. I wonder how many acres of trees you can manage without attracting the wrong kind of attention. From greedy freeloaders and speculators, etc.

10bob to 4k spread over 10 years is what - 40X return per year? Ignore NPV. Assuming the capital/land is not a loan or lease. 40X per year is not bad for such medium risk.

Tesla @ 10usd in 2010 IPO - now 3380 - that 37X roi per year. Trees :) so far but swiftly rising

Bitcoin @ 12usd in 2012 - now 38k - that 350X return per year. Windfall

The risk are minimal. Rural kenya doesn't have any thuggery. People know people. The risk are maybe fire or some strange disease - otherwise trees are my main long term investment for some years now.

Remember the stocks you're talking about is - one lucky break (stock) - otherwise you may wake up to find Telsa stock has tank to zero tomorrow. So apply the general market rate of return (law of averages apply) - and you'll see it one stupid way to invest money.

That is why it's like a casion. But my trees aren't; the land itself will appreciate; and I can havest for another 20yrs - the next will sprout on their own.

After trees - the next think I do is land/plots. They appreciate annually whenever.

Pple with phd in investing struggle with market but your nephew is so smart - he is smarter than market. I think generally everyone makes or losses the average of market returns. You've to be really gifted to always a pick a winner - and you haven't met your nightmarish days - so stick around for longer - so you can see the market play with your sanity.

For kenya - it this simple - real estate grew by 25%, equities 16% and treasury bonds 13%.

In this article, we focus on real estate in Kenya, a tangible investment asset class, that has outperformed the other asset classes generating returns of on average 25.0% over the last five years against average returns of 16.2% for equities and 12.9% for the 5-year government bond over the same period

I could be wrong but real estate has collapsed more often and spectacularly than stocks. This tends to wipe out the value of wood too.

When was that - esp in developing country like kenya - as for wood - their usage is myriad - especially where I come from it's use as firewood for tea processing - now it's kshs 2500 per cubic meter
