Robina and HK should read this. Public investment is critical engine of growth. You cannot survive entirely on private investment - because of it's narrow profit objective.

Rubbish.

Without private investors govts would collapse. Recall Bill Gates yearly earnings is larger than Tanzania's GDP.

We'd like to think the public sector is for the greater good but without moneyed lone wolves, people like Obama would never have been elected, govts could get away with killing off innocents if without moneyed individuals keeping them in check... and vice versa.

No one is saying get rid of private sector but she dispelling the myths that innovation is led by lone wolves. Lones wolves are businessmen but the most of initial innovation comes from public sector.

Why don't we have lone wolves emerging from Tanzania or any other random place. Why are places where Gov invested heavily in R & D - the one that lead in innovations. Starting from funding of education all the way to research institution - all that is public sector investments by gov. Then some kid spins something out of university or public funded research - goes on to patent - and declares themselves lone wolves genius.

I don't think there is a private players with enough muscle, perspective and don't care if we make profit ever attitude enough to fund innovation & research like governments.

That is why countries that choose to invest in R & D - eventually spin off innovative private sector.

Private sector mainly polishes all the for public-good research and make money out of it. DFID funded MPESA and vodafone went on to commercialize it and claim credit. Nobody ever wants to talk about the fact that M-pesa was funded by UK goverment.

Rubbish.
