Robina, Is Tesla AutoPilot an Oxymoron?
« on: January 24, 2018, 10:49:03 PM »
Autopilot is intended for use only with a fully attentive driver
This is according to Tesla spokesperson but I highly doubt they are this forward about its capabilities during their marketing blitz

So what purpose does it serve?

vooke, Let's wait for the details. Last time a fatal Autopilot accident occurred the blackbox clearly recorded the driver ignored repeated alarms from Autopilot to take over. Including splashing him with water in case he was asleep. My Chevy Bolt's Cruise has certified level 3 (out of 5) abilities. I still don't trust it except on the clear highway. Tesla Autopilot has level 3 autonomy as well. Both GM and Tesla claim to be level 4 of course.

As is if these cars can navigate through potholes. .. splashing water is the most stupid thing ever... are you telling me if I don't respond in like say 10 seconds it's gonna slash me with water?! I could be listening to music and then suddenly woosh? Why doesn't the vehicle just stop if it's so serious to warrant a splash? I swear these vehicles were designed by gamers.

Dear Robina, you may be good at developing make believe sx dungeons for all I care, but there are consequences to what you may just consider to be quirky large tin paraphernalias.

I noticed that pictorial for level 3 is suggestive.

Do you honestly feel comfortable having a conversation ladida tea and crumpets with your back to the road while your Chevy just cruises?

That poster characterises the relationship phases nerds have with so little regard for safety hazards. It's encouraging people to not take the wheel in a relationship... to not bother with safe love making. sickens me. God forbid, I even know a guy or two on level zero.

There are highway sections without wiggle room. Or bad weather. Or mountainous. For the fatal Tesla case Autopilot spotted a "misbehaving trailer" ahead in a busy section. It repeatedly warned the driver before the crash. Poor thing was tossed off the road! At least according to the report.

Yup - my Chevy will first give a visual signal, then audio, then loud bonk, then splash me with water if I don't respond to imminent danger like a wayward trailer. It's a configuration that is optional. Imagine the highway suddenly gets misty - Cruise can drive on alone but needs my attention - I fail to respond to bonks - what to do? Park on a dark roadside?? I choose a cold water spray.

veri, Boys will always be boys. In the factory we have cctv everywhere so everyone is safe. I still maintain a very thick skin against the sexism. Reality 101.

Gaming and scifi is a precursor to robotics - which is what autonomous cars are. Why are people not horrified by gangster films with the mass murder, maimings and rape? If folks dropped the double standard reserved for gaming Hollywood would shut down pronto.

Oh we could say, what if that big heavy metal bird drops off the sky?? Boeing's autopilot can do all but landing and take off. It even taxis on auto! But we know many more fatalities are attributed to the "safe" human-controlled ground vehicles than aircrafts and self driving cars. The human element of illogical terror can't beat the statistics.

Can I happily nap as my pal drives me around? Well! Chevy Cruise is the best pal I know. She's never fatigued, drunk or distracted. The statistics speak for her.

Ok

But my take is the manufacturers exaggerate these capabilities

Omg, because there's air in the sky & kids don't fly. Gangster films are true? The art of Capitalism & statecraft. Precursor to robots are military products, please don't be naive to think these gaming tin cans are gonna be precursors to AI or the Terminator.

Chevy Cruise may have big shiny eyes but she could also be your worst enemy. She bonks at you, wets you, costs you, does nada in the face of sexism, I mean she sounds like such high maintenance compared to my sweetie.

This next word may scare you... manual.

Vooke, that first bit you mentioned went over my head... i'm not nerdy... but that last sentence I understood. Commercial vans to military tanks are manual and likely to remain so because of issues to do with hacking and national security.

My sibling has an autonomous car and it's been a few months and he's had about a half a dozen issues where he had to have the car towed back to the dealer... trivial issues like his car beeping non-stop, lights flashing nonstop, not responding to his car keys, they've all been electronic issues and the roadside mechanic couldn't do nada.

When something is that automated from the start, it's got a shelf life. Manual lasts the distance if well maintained, no matter how well you maintain an ipad it'll eventually die whereas that PC is still upgradable & useable.

Robina could lipsynch to Beyonce while licking her icecream and gossip to Cruise but these sorts of one-sided driving don't last. There are unspoken rules in the universe like equilibrium- when one side does all the driving- they eventually break down, go mad, and if there isn't reciprocal give and take by both parties then the relationship doesn't last. Basically Robina treats Cruise like her slave. I've been in those types of relationships before and it don't last.

These cars need a dead man's switch like electic trains.
