Ethiopia Declares State Of Emergency
« on: October 09, 2016, 10:10:29 PM »
Quote from: Al-Jazeera
Ethiopia has declared a state of emergency following months of often violent anti-government protests, especially in the restive Oromia region.

"A state of emergency has been declared because the situation posed a threat against the people of the country," Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said on state-run television on Sunday.

Local media said the state of emergency, declared for the first time in 25 years, will last for six months.
This is bad, that government has to start listening to the needs of the people

I saw a destroyed factory.  Not a good sign.  What are they protesting?

Dangote's cement factory. These Ethiopians have no respect for blackman's investment. Why did they not go for Chinaman's factories?

This is where Ethiopia can't replicate China. Ethiopia as heterogeneous country cannot ran as dictatorship. China could given 95% of China is Hans tribe. The solution is for them to embrace modern democracy, more protection for private property (not taking by force land and starting grandiose projects).

Ethiopia is KaPUT as long as tiny tigreys try to control the majority Oromos and Amharas.

The problem with copy pasting, they thought it would be easy to replicate everything the china man does. The government may decide to beat the opposition into pulp but they will lose the support they are enjoying from U.S.A. Something has to give, they either have to broaden the democratic space or become a hemitic economy like Eritrea and North Korea.

Mele Zenawi understood this but his solution (federalism) was not fully implemented. You have federal gov who are not elected but appointed. You have gov main party winning by 100%. Pure mockery of democracy that even Sadam Hussein and those arabs dictator couldn't pull.

Rwanda and Ethiopia have to deal with the elephant in the house...small tribal elite controlling the country. The economy has been booming but all it will take is a coup or violence and you're back to square one.

This is where countries like Kenya, TZ, Zambia, Ghana, now Nigeria and are far ahead. Fix democracy. Only very few countries can survive a dictatorship and they have to be homegenous. Of course democracy in heteregenous country like kenya breed tribalism but you can copy from US' really strong consitution, institutions and checks and balance you can protect the right of minorities.

Politicians need to listen. Govt by the people for the people works best. State of emergencies only create distrust and chaos. States where govt fear people like Korea work very well.
