TOOP is back up.  One should be able to fetch a few nuggets from there.

British captain A. Gatti and two pygmies with a 500lb gorilla strung from a pole, which the captain shot in the Tchibinda forest in the Lake Kivu region, Democratic Republic of the Congo, circa 1930.

Termie, I just saw this show on Discovery about people who escaped death by a whisker. This two white guys were in some forest (or park?) filming a family of Gorillas. The Gorillas were lead by this mean-looking male silver back, swear your guy there looks slim in comparison. One guy was caught seated by the road-side. The silver back's "toddler" took an unhealthy interest in him, touching him, playing with his hair, etc. Man, didn't the giant male Gorilla look scary! He stood infront of him staring, the mzungu knew to keep perfectly style, look down, with a hand over his face, hiding it away. Eventually the Gorilla sat behind him until his kiddo got tired of playing with the mzungu hair and off they went.

The commentators said that had he not avoided eye-contact, looked down, remained still, he might have met his maker.

I thought of this picture. :D

Mangbetu.  A Nilo-Saharan group from DRC.  An elongated head was the epitome of beauty.

Wow. I wonder if this is due to nutrition deficiencies. Seems however, it may've been a genetic thing..

Mangbetu have normal skulls.  They just found the elongated version a sweet thing.  So they bound infants heads to make them elongated.

The woman on the left is actually Tutsi.  That is a hairstyle rather than skull shape.

Yep.  It is called lipombo.  Apparently the look was associated with social status and intelligence.  Mummies from Egyptian pyramids suggest that the pharaohs also underwent lipombo.

April 2014, Somali are uprooted from their homes in sections of Nairobi and herded to Kasarani "to flush out terrorists and illegal immigrants"

Aborigines live like that?

Is that really happening in Nairobi right now?! That's horrendous.

Folks in Utopia live like that.  The curious choice of name did not escape my attention.  The Nairobi thing was last year.  Somalis herded into Kasarani cages "to tackle security challenges".

This is the first I'm hearing of the place. I wonder if there's a mythical secret there. Someone called it utopia for a reason no ?

With all the heavyhandedness I'm shocked many Africans, including here in DC support Uhuru.

Tell me how the "cattle" in those pens will ever forgive the Fatherland? I can assure you no matter what you say to me afterwards, if you place me in that cage I can simply redirect you to seek forgiveness from God because I won't ever forgive nor forget and will work overtime to either get you there or your kids.

That is the kind of society we have created. It is full of angry youth who now see old age approaching before they make use of the degree we made them study for.

During early childhood you can shape the skull to the elongated shape.

During early childhood you can shape the skull to the elongated shape.
Groups did that for different reasons.  Some associated it with higher status.  In ancient Egypt, it was associated with royalty.
