Where are our new friends from the East? That East relationship is a one sided affair.

China bought Kenya-made goods worth less than Sh3.4 billion tilting trade in favour of Beijing. This is less than 12.5 per cent of what US consumers bought from Kenya.

It upon us to find something to export to China....otherwise it would be more helpful if you can identify any bottleneck Chinese have place on our exports? I believe there is none. It down mostly to ignorance and lack of partnership...

But there is no doubt that future trade...both import and export...for kenya especially..is CHINA and INDIA...both of which are mere 2-3 weeks! US is how many months? maybe 2 months to really ship anything of real volume.

For those of us who know East Asia kidogo, I can assure you that when the Chinese and Kenyan high command [think Xi Jinping/Li Keqiang meeting Uhuru/Ruto], the former must be having the laughs of their lives. Ever played chess against a two year old, or scrabble perhaps?

It will be a very long time if ever before Kenya sells anything to China that is not oil or minerals. Alernatively, you could do what the South Koreans and the Japanese are increasingly doing vis-a-vis China, that is, attracting record number of Chinese tourists for shopping -- closing the gap in trade with China with a surplus on services, that is, tourism receipts. So, for example, venture to Akihabara district of Tokyo [electronics] or Shinjuku or Ginza [cosmetics] and you are bound to see many Chinese tourists laden with all kinds of electronic products and cosmetics (they consider Japanese products to be of superior quality). Myeong-dong or Gangnam for Seoul.

 So remind me again just how many Chinese tourists visit Kenya on safari -- and don't count those working on the SGR project.
