Poor Journalistic Standards now "Normal"
« on: July 10, 2015, 05:44:41 PM »
What's wrong with this story?

When did a magistrate start presiding over the High Court in Kenya? I must confess I have not been very keen on news the last three months and much may have happened while I was away. But I doubt that such a mega change would take place without my knowing about it.

Who charges suspects? The High Court? Did this journalist hear the DPP actually ask the High Court to take out new charges against Kuria? I just pinched myself to remind myself I am not dealing with the Spanish or Italian judiciary where judges can also be prosecutors. In fact a prosecutor is a judge or magistrate.

Clearly this "journalist" heard a few things but cannot make head or tail of it. The Star, like the rest of the Kenyan Newspapers, lacks properly educated editorial staff that would have captured these huge blunders and prevented them from reaching the world.

Sadly, our newspapers continue to be a source of ignorance. The days when I advised young people to read newspapers to improve their language are long gone! These days I advise them to stay well clear of the entire Kenyan media if they have to remain knowledgeable. I know somebody carried out research in the US and determined that Fox News made all those watching it to become more stupid than before they started watching it. I think a similar research would find the same plus more. Kenyan media actually place all those who get exposed to it in grave peril.

The High Court has summoned Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria over allegedly urging the killing of those opposed to the National Youth Service.

Principal magistrate Tabitha Nyangena directed Kuria to appear before the courts on July 16.

The summons comes after DPP Keriako Tobiko filed an application asking the court to cancel the Sh2 million bail the politician paid for his release over an earlier incitement suit.

Tobiko further asked the court to issue fresh charges against Kuria over the remarks made in a video which emerged on Wednesday.

In the Video, Kuria encourages panga-wielding youth in Kiambu to attack politicians who have raised questions over alleged graft at NYS.

The MP recorded statements with serious crime investigators when he was grilled at the CID headquarters for close to two hours on Thursday.

He apologised for the remarks on Wednesday, but maintained they were misconstrued and taken out of context.

Saying action would have been taken by now had he incited the public, he promised to hold a meeting with the youths he addressed to clarify what he meant.

"I was angry and worried that the demolitions might permeate to my constituency," he said during a press conference at Parliament buildings.

The MP accused the opposition of "pure" political witch-hunt, saying they dragged President Uhuru Kenyatta's name into the matter to settle scores.

The ODM had called for Kuria's arrest and prosecution, claiming he is the face of a plot by Jubilee to rig the 2017 poll.
