He is half Meru,his mother .Kindiki really is being seen as a stooge of Ruto, the only thing that aids Kindiki is that he isnt into controversy like corruption things and scandals and is quite collected and reasonable, not emotionally wreck loke gachagua so thats plays into Kindikis favor. However as to the question who Merus prefer basically they see this as political nonsense by Ruto trying to hide Adani and other corrupt issues.

Kindiki does not have to stand against Gachagua. If the MPigs ompeach Gachagua and the Senate upholds it, then Kindiki has won the battle for the moment. Kindiki will never win over the Kikuyu vote. That is not even the intention of Ruto. He wants to split the Merus and Embus from the Kikuyu.
