Look like kenya has to find niche in quality beans - and leave Uganda for low quality coffee

Yes kenya niche is specialty coffee sold directly to coffee buyers instead of NCE auctions. There are no cartels in coffee industry its up to the farmers to produce good coffee. The coffee cooperative societies fetching good prices are very well run . Over 90% of the coffee produced is high grade, meaning on average they get the best prices since coffee is priced by grade.

Now I understand it. Gov needs to refocus on this - with our limited arable land - increasingly getting squeezed out by real estate - that is only hope.

Maybe in west of rift - they can grow useless Robusta instant coffee.
East of rift - focus on high quality Arabica coffee.

Export wise - this low hanging fruit - we need to convert maize growing Nandi/Bungoma/kakamega/kericho/Keiyo - into coffee growing regions - they should grow cheap robusta.

Maize/cereals should be grown uko kalana kulala.....while avacados/coffee/tea/dairy/all exportable cash crops given priority
