I am shocked that moi was in power for 24 years subjugating other Kenyans
Kales during those days treated other Kenyans like subhuman torturing them at nyayo and nyati hosuses now they kales have joined other Kenyans to work as slaves in Saudi Arabia.

Modern day slavery. Cant someone start agency in Saudi Arabia - where these girls are not live-in maids. They go in the morning and come out in afternoon - working normal 8 hours shifts? At end of the day - there is poverty in kenya - and there is money in Saudi.

When I lived in Kampala - these agencies were all over - but what I noticed unlike kenya - they did training for like two weeks - were taught to wear hijab - how to cook - and etc. In Kenya - I doubt they are prepared - when I fly Qatar airlines - you see many girls in groups being taken abroad...every day.

I am not sure if Uganda girls do get to suffer similar fate - but some of these agents should prepare and manage expectation of these girls.

Tell them to mop four floors building twice a day - if they cannot hack it - let them not board the plane. What awaits them in Saudi is hard labour as these not kenya type of dwelling - but communal living - indian like setup where extended families live/eat together in huge buildings.

Because those household spend a fortunes to bring them in - buy air tickets - pay agent fees - then girl get a shock of their lifes by amount of work - and want to run back to kenya - and now the mateso starts - as each party tries to get their money worth - you cannot go to Saudis - and after a week of hard labour want to bail out - when those agents already collected six month salaries in advances - and return airtickets - probably paid 10K USD.

Yes, you nail it, but the problem is across the board. All African countries go through the same. It is a race issue in Saudi, followed by corruption in Kenya/Africa. I have a niece-in-law now in Saudi Hostel, and we are trying to get her out. As soon as President-elect is sworn in, you can bet that will be the priority. Agents should be telling girls that they will be working a minimum of 16 hours a day with limited food, then rape/sodomy from time to time. I think almost 80% will think hard before signing up. Saudi Arabia is simply a cemetery for dark-skinned people. Taking the passport is designed to keep African slaves from day one. Now, when a phone is snatched, expect torture and full scale matezo to begin. Embassies and Governments are hopeless, corrupt, and non-responsive. Ruto has a plan that will be fully operational in a year! In two years, this thing kaput!

It appears foreign ministry is not ideal for this. We need diaspora office. Establish offices in Saudi Arabi main cities. Have Kenya social or labour workers who routinely check on the girls. If there is a problem -  they are flown back home - the agents have to sign that. Of course it not going to be possible to change Sharia law on labour - and agent contracts.

The diaspora ministry should focus on where Kenyans are many -  Saudis, Dubais, Qatars, China, Australia, US, UK - have offices that deal strictly with labour issues - foreign affairs can deal with immigration/foreign relations.

But we need diaspora officers helping kenya relocate, find jobs abroad and manage their relocation.

This issue will have to be studied by relevant stakeholders, and good effective policies will be implemented. I don't think diaspora will solve anything if the same incompetence is allowed to continue. If a diaspora ministry is created, it should dedicate its strength to Saudi/gulf and other dangerous areas. Kenyans in the west, ESPECIALLY the USA, want simple things like Voting/passport issuance and thriving economy/trusted institutions in Kenya/EA, nothing more. The Kenyan government needs to negotiate with Saudi to remove the holding of passports by employer policy, among other things. Embassies should be robust enough to keep tabs on Kenyans. In Saudi Arabia, 90% of Kenyans are in 3-4 major cities, so managing them should be easy. Building capacity of embassies with Kenyans who have lived outside Kenya is better than country pumpkins in Kenya who are rude and have no customer/PEOPLE skills

these idiots deserve every ill treatment they get. I was discussing this with my mum the other day. she told me that these girls won't do any work in kenya. if you offer them the same maid job and same pay they will opt to "abroad". right now she was telling there are a lot of homes in nairobi in need of maids, caregivers but most people do not want to work these jobs in kenya but they are willing to accept rhe same conditions in middle east

let them learn the hard way. in early 2000s a woman in my village returned from Saudi with her nails damaged from using chemicals to clean tiles without being offered gloves. she made sure she talked to all the other girls in the village about the dangers of working in middle east. some listened others didn't

in my village if you are poor you can still make a decent loving all you have to do is be willing to pick tea and do all ogled type of jobs.

Agreed it mostly middle east problem - but generally Kenya gov can do even more to relocate more of excess labour - until we figure out how to employ them. Perhaps deliberate mass employment is required but meantime - the excess labour should go - to middle east - and we only need gov intervention in those live-in maids.

Seeing our forexs are drying - remittance can easily rise to 10B dollars annually - as we sort out mass housing/mass industralization
