In Canada.  Depressing stuff.  Water is fun, but always have a partner at a minimum.  Preferably, have basic water survival skills like being able to swim a few yards to safety.

I am good swimmer but if there is something people need to fear - it's water. Even water in bail or bucket can kill you. Fear water. Like anything - the most dangerous phase is when you know just about the basic and you start getting cocky. Be it swimming or driving or any skills - overconfidence is normally what kills.

This girl clearly has basic swimming skills - she went to deep end - probably misjudge the distance - run out of breathe - and there was no one around to save her. If only she could relax - she would have floated - but most people panick - and they sink. If you get tired - just flip on you back - and you'll float effortlessly.

Yes, water is bad news for nonswimmers. Anything above my knees scares me to death, but not my kids; every time we go to the beach, they go almost a mile deep into the deep blue sea until I can barely see them. Scary stuff, but I have learned people who know how to swim are safe, just like fish in the water. The lady that drowned was not a swimmer! May her soul RIP. It must be terrifying for the family to see someone drown to death, only for two white guys to come and say the poodle seems drowned in the water!

She didn't.  She always stopped and stood up when she was done with her 2 to 3 yard skit.  Which makes her move to the deep end even more audacious - she couldn't find the bottom when she tried to stand up and panicked drowning literally a few yards from the edge - that's not a swimmer.  I have seen folks in the deep end, who are better than that, and I still wouldn't consider them swimmers.  They would be perfectly fine in the pool with lifeguards around though.

Not quite.  You need survival skills for emergencies, including laying on your back like Pundit says.  You should probably insist your kids go with an open water buoy whenever they go beyond line of sight(generally a bad idea in the ocean for all swimmer levels).

Swimming alone is asking for trouble, anything can happen, a cramp, hit your head, pass out etc we just had an African drown in my town, we buried him last week.
