Pundit and Bitmask: The ransomware attacks

Went almost unremarked on this forum. How can we make sense of it? Is this the beginning of more such and what can governments really do about it? Does UDA have a ransomware policy? Feels like doomsday.

It seems like a bad thing, but I am not familiar with cryptography beyond the user end of things specifically TLS and certificates(shooting for A minimum on ssllabs).

Bitmask that's Greek to me. I'm not so much into the technical bit. Can future hacks be avoided? I read a story of a group that allegedly used a set of malware developed by Uncle Sam's men to target enemies. The bulldogs came back to bite their own!

I just don't know cryptography well enough.  That aside, most ransomware should be easy to mitigate with common sense processes.  Regular backups, don't click suspicious links etc.
