I was looking up our own Davy Koech to see what he was saying on Covid-19. It turns out he could not avoid the much more potent Kenyan virus of embezzlement. :-[
Former Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) Director Davy Koech has been arraigned in court over alleged fraudulent acquisition of Sh19.3 million.
Yesterday, Dr Koech pleaded not guilty to abuse of office and fraudulent acquisition of the parastatal’s property.

Look like nobody has been able to fill Davy Koech shoes at KEMRI. Kemri should be our CDC. But its fallen out of glory.

Is it a Kenyan greed thing or our intellectual/subject experts poorly remunerated? For such rare minds/brain 19 million transgressions should be easily forgiven/overlooked.

Most experts laughed at the idea, but I escused Moi as he did not know any better on the professional process of introducing any new findings in science. Koech knew better, but still played ball. We all know the end of this scam and the guy proved to be just a con like his said discoveries. Even the self declared prophet is a better conman.
The ethnic nature of our country makes us not have the best people in the right positions. Am not even sure that Koech was the best scientist in town, but the department had to be held by a Kale.

Yes KEMRON with Prof Obel was a con job but If you ask anybody now about KEMRI - nobody knows about it. Dr (Prof) Davy Koech did well to raise the profile of KEMRI - and his successors have failled. Right now KEMRI would be leading in this CORONA business - but it absent.So a little charisma and right connections at statehouses & donors won't hurt.
Despite Kemron and corruption - Dr Davy Koech stand tall in medical research in kenya.

I think that was Arthur Obel's schtick. Davy Koech just happened to be in charge of the institution.
Obel is now selling a concoction called Iconaire.
Very few things bother him. At 74, he says he has seen and done it all. What thrills him are his 21 choice cars -- picked from the Mercedes Benz, Peugeot and BMW family -- his insatiable obsession with books and Iconaire – the drug he formulated a few years ago and is now using to treat HIV patients.

Koech was the head of KEMRI at that time and he should never have let his surbodinate run such a connish show with no substance to prove. Koech lost the respect he had from Kenyans and his involvment in corruption topped it all. No wonder he disapeared from the limelight. Nobody hears from him today. He is even lucky o be living in a banana republic. He should be serving his time at Kamiti.

Koech is not a doctor. Kemri is research institution. Medical research. Koech helped start it and see it rise...thanks to aligning with Americans. Most of tropical disease research was funded by Europeans but as Americans starting having global ambition - they realized they needed to do more research on tropical disease.
This Corona is a big opportunity for KEMRI...now they need to get funding from waking Bill Gates.

Yes Koech is a scientist and so is Gikonyo. Most specialists are essentially scientists - because you specialize by practice and gathering knowledge. Likes of Arthur Obel lead research at UoN and also work at KNH on diabetes.
You are right KEMRI is research body. Just like CDC which is not leading anything as medical administrators - physicians - take over. Dr Deby Birsk and Tony Fauci - Trump corona crew - are not per se research scientists but physicians aka doctors.
I think research bodies cannot handle emergency such as corona nor are they meant to. You research stuff with DATA - which brand new diseases won't have. HIV was 10 year old by the time Pearl Omega or Kemron came about. CDC or KEMRI research, prepare and advise on prevention and control of pandemics but running the show is for medical admins in GoK.

There were claims about KEMRI "fixing" the malaria scourge, reducing cancer deaths, etc. Century-old diseases. And of course Pearl Omega - a sort of syrup like Omega3 for ARV. To me Kemri was just a Nyayo Milk, Nyayo Bus or Nyayo Pioneer One car model set up around '79 by the semi-literate hare-brained arap Nyayo. "Moi Medical Research Institute" would have been more suitable.
