Title: Russia aims to double agricultural exports to Africa
Post by: RVtitem on October 27, 2019, 11:11:31 PM
The Russian Ministry of Agriculture said on Wednesday that Moscow is seeking to significantly increase supplies of grain and livestock to African countries.

“Africa is our target market, and we will work on enlarging exports there,” Agriculture Minister Dmitry Patrushev told journalists on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa summit in Sochi.

The exported products could be interesting to any region, but Africa could potentially purchase sufficiently large volumes, he said.

We don't need agricultural imports but knowledge. Israel and Dutch are good partners for agritech. Kenya needs to strike proper exchange programs to learn the top-notch drone irrigation, salinisation and milk efficiency stuff. The trickledown NGO or Galana model has not been effective. Russia I doubt has agric or food innovations to share.

How exactly can we stop land misuse - I think i's a lost cause - we need to focus on irrigating million of acres in counties like coast, north rift (turkana), Marsabit and even NEP.

Yep. Economic freedom and property rights means Kenya cannot go the eminent domain route of largescale farming in the green strip. Only Delamere and a few rich folks have big land now. Agritech esp irrigation and GMOs can milk the idle goldmine in the 80% ASAL. If Kenya modernized agric - there is limitless potential - instead of folks congesting in the green stretch and invading the Aberdares or Mau. 100% of Israel is desert but it such an awesome green oasis. They tap the solar and wind and use it for desert farming. Now you have Palestine and claiming the tiny desert spot is the only viable ancestral Canaan. They should photocopy it in the Sinai.

California is 90% asal but is decorated with vineyards and wineries outside of the cities. It is a Big Oasis or Israel model. We lead in vintage mvinyo business - eclipsing Russian vodka and French souvignon. Israel has much more to teach Kenya than the Dutch. Because Holland is 100% green climate. They can teach us high density farming - dairies - but Israeli tech is absolutely needed to milk the ASAL idle asset. We can accept Kenya is still big on agric and refocus there - that the Vision missed out. It is a lower hanging fruit than elusive manufacturing.

I think we need to copy Egypt or Sudan -  Isreal or California really have no rivers. Isreal pretty much a desert. We have plentiful rivers. We can do mass irrigations. We need Kulana-Gulalu - 1M acres - with best agriculture can feed kenya. Tana river is flowing to Indian Ocean - and we can irrigate from Mbeere, Ukambani, Garissa, Tana River and Lamu - we can unlock maybe another 2M acres. We have Turkwel river flowing through Turkana and West Pokot - huge potentials for irrigation. Nyanza is wasteland that should be irrigated together with Busia...there are plentiful of rivers there.

Nobody should own less than 1k acres in agri rich areas. This will force people or entities to consolidate or sell. Need to look 100yrs ahead. Once skyscrapers go up, its had to regain the land. No use of eminent domain. Subdividing land has become uneconomical and a big business at the expense of development.

All these model ASALs countries quoted have one thing in common; heavy subsidies. That's where the magic tech comes from. That's why Israel tech flopped in Galana. We can't have serious subsidies? Forget being competitive. In fact agric is really competition among governments at subsidies more than anything else

California yes there is big subsidy for farmers. And cheap immigrant labor. Not sure it is the case for Israel. Is it?

Yes they are plus import quotas that keep the produce artificially expensive for locals.
