One of conservatism’s most important insights is that all ideologies are wrong. Well, including conservatism! So, the US is dipped to the neck with maladies of the human condition. Still it buffles me when brilliant folks as Thiel ascribe this squarely to the Left. Before liberalism and the culture wars - in the premodern, medieval era so nostalgic to the Right - colonisation, slave trade, cannibalism, witch hunting and other barbaries resigned. Nay, crusades are still live in the Middle East, do these guys know the meaning of suffering? We are only the slaves of freedom which is a bed of roses compared even to real communism.

This Thiel dude is confusing. It's hard to summarize what he is all about. It must be the same for the intelligent people publicly supporting the most anti-intellectual President in living memory. He even suggests automation ain't a thing, yet you just need to look at how you do things today compared to a decade ago.
About conservatives, that's just a PC term for a certain type of person. There has never been any enduring principle that they follow. They are just bigots, clocking themselves in the most convenient cover story of the day.
That said an American conservative is a very different animal from a European conservative. European conservatives would be just slightly right of Bernie Sanders. American conservatives would be caucusing with the Marine Le Pen types and similar fringe elements if they were in Europe.
