Title: Uganda shelves plan to extend SGR from Malaba to Kampala
Post by: Kadudu on October 31, 2018, 01:48:44 PM
This could be a big blow to Kenya and could make SGR a white elephant. In case Kenya does not secure the Chinese loan to even extend the railway line from Naivasha to Kisume, then we will have a big problem once the interest and principal are due.
Uganda's wait and see tactic could work for it, but would be for Kenya a catastrophe.

Museveni should avoid Chinese debt colonisation.

Uhuru is head deep in china debt!

Did Uganda ever sign anything with Kenya regarding the SGR?

No. Just sweet words to sooth Uhuru's soul. Museveni is too clever to place all his cards in one basket. I think if Kenya manages to extend the railway line to Kisumu, Uganda would rethink its position. At the moment chances are low Kenya will even get a loan from Chine for a further extension. SGR is buying money and China wants a realistic business plan and not just PR.

It actually kenya who pulled the plug on M7 as a revenge for oil pipeline.

Kenya doesn't really need to extend the line beyond Naivasha or Kisumu or Eldoret.

Unless it was to worry about 75% of 25% of cargo that is Uganda bound. 75% of cargo in Mombasa is kenyan.

Therefore kenya want to go to Kisumu and terminate it there - with a port - where Uganda or Rwanda or TZ can use ships for the last mile to Jinja, Kampala, Mwanza and etc.

If not - Kenya want Uganda to help fund extension to Malaba or China to provide that as a grant.
