That's the real elephant in the room. When taxation goes beyond a certain level, people stop using the goods and services being taxed like Safaricom airtime and data bundles. The result is that overall gains from taxation are lower than before. The government gets desperate and begins taxing air...... The article is right on the money. When normal life is disrupted certain social vices reemerge, like Mungiki, corruption cartels, neighborhood gangs and police extortion. These things are happening for real in Zamunda. Uhuru is crafting his legacy in blood.

First this article of full of bullshiet anecdotal evidence that pale in comparison with empirical data that shows economy is doing great.
On the contrary Uhuru legacy is being cemented. Uhuru had nailed everything except corruption. Those are just the temporary pains as Uhuru deal with corruption.
The economy let me remind all of you again grew by 6% the last Q.
Mpesa transactions are up 8% compared to 2017. There is at least 1B more more flowing through MPESA every day now compared to last year.
Central Bank of Kenya report shows an average of Sh10.97 billion were transacted daily through mobile money transfers in July- September 2018 in relation to last year’s Sh9.74 billion in the same period.

pundi must be a real miser or sadist. I start knowing folks are in Kenya when decent people start begging for money. Kenya economy is only worku
-
Solid evidence indicate the economy recently grew by 6.3% - 2nd Q - the highest quarterly growth in five years. - we will soon find out how we did in 3rd Q.
People just like to complain - but agriculture did so well with good rains - food is very cheap and nobody is "starving". Tourism is booming. Manufacturing is up. The only sector struggling are finance & intermediation - and this probably explain why some middle class are complaining.

Yes economy did well the 2nd quarter cause of good rains. And since kenya manufacturing has a big chunk of agri-processing, the sector also ticked up. Communications and food service, the 3rd quarter won't grow as fast due to increased taxation of both sectors. Its very revealing that financial and trade slowed down. This is an indicator that there was less money in circulation. There's a new phenomena going on in manufacturing and trade, kadogo economy is exploding to the middle class market. This shows kenyans are downsizing cause of the hard economic times. The numbers might be rosy but income earnings not rising to even offset rising cost of living. This is the primary reason why kenyans are complaining .

I think kenyans just like to complain. The only crisis I see is why we can only export 5B worth of goods year in year out.

The glass is half empty for Kenyans coming from a Kibandinga economic boom to crashing economic realities under Uhuruto. Haven't met anybody not crying except uhuru, ruto, mwangi and pundit. Even Kenya Power thugs have started feeling the heat despite the crazy tariffs.
-
Pundit's prediction of Ruto's presidency is based on the economy doing great and therefore he will never say anything negative about the economy because that would mean he has to face the reality that Ruto will not succeed Ouru as president. He is too proud to for that.

There's no question despite the figures being bounded around the real economy is struggling with private sector barely surviving. There's no commensurate increased tax collection due to higher growth rate despite increased taxes as per treasury projections. Why is it our revenue ratio has been dropping yet we're suppose to believe the economy is growing https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/business/article/2001262930/kenya-s-tax-revenue-growth-lowest-in-a-decade-says-world-bank ? If everything hold constant a growing economy should yield higher revenue to march GDP growth. Meaning the revenue ratio shouldn't be dropping precipitously.
-
Revenues grew by 13% in 2016/2017 to 1.4 - slightly lag behind nominal gdp growth 14% - despite difficult 2017 with half the year spent on elections - revenue still grew from 1.36b to 1.4B -against target of 1.5b. The main problem is ministries & agencies A-I-A - there seem to be either corruption or under-reporting or spending at source.
Anyway this year with corruption crackdown across board - let see if that will help - like it certainly help in 2003 when Kibaki came in and entreched interest started paying taxes.

the nominal gdp was higher due to inflation in 2017 https://www.statista.com/statistics/451115/inflation-rate-in-kenya/ .
