Title: Shooting chaos today....
Post by: veritas on August 10, 2018, 01:03:40 PM
I was happily eating my lunch with a colleague when I heard choppers circling above... frantic call from my colleague's mother about how someone had been shot dead literally across the street from us.

We go inside the building and contact security who had no idea about it and told us to fck off no lock down, even though it was in the news and the police had issued a lock down in that area. Then we heard a scream down the hallway, two persons with duffle bags had come inside the building pulling out draws in one of the offices and had dissapeared somewhere in the building. So management locked all the doors and told us to hide while they resolved the situation. Hide where? Amongst the cubicles?

A manager asked two of the buffest guys to come with to check inside the building... it was met by liberal rage and HR threats ie. fck off that's sexist and one buff ran into the cupboard to hide. Management contemplated whether the dean should be interrupted from his lecture to international students about the situation, then decided it was best to not, because we needed the money, even though he was giving a lecture in the same building and jeopardizing the lives of many. A manager declared she would check inside the building and reminded all her funeral flowers had to be white and not coloured. She told me to hide because I mattered but the others could get shot, so I reassured her if worse comes to worse I'd hide under my desk. She was satisfied with that and went off to check.

When she went off, we fled, ran out of the building and now I'm at home.

What a day.

Anything crazy like that happen to you guys? I guess shootings and muggings are common in Kenya. I've been at gun point a few times in Kenya but I didn't feel threatened. I think what's disturbing in these parts is the level of crazy. People lose it.

Been through it, something close. Can't discuss details. Scary stuff. Stay calm, check around you and escape as quietly and as safely as you can. Don't be tempted to do something crazy. In one of the situations I was involved in, we considered taking them down but shelved it considering the likelihood of casualties. A guy in my group told me he was prepared to take one attacker down even if it cost him his life.

Thanks GM. I would've thought staff would be more vigilant but a couple were just toxic and selfish about it and carried on typing away and giving management the stink eye. They epitomized the silos even if their lives were in danger. Lucky for us, couple of my colleagues are ex-military and were mildly annoyed and reluctantly agreed to accompany and do a sweep. They do this each morning and have interesting stories like catching peeps having sex, lost tourists, hazing, theft, drugs, homeless people, crazy pants etc etc.

Veri you are a good storyteller.  Your reconstruction of a scene is engaging.  Maybe you should do short plays.

Personally, I haven’t been around a live crime scene with firearms or even around angry people with guns.  Yet recent events in the US(easier for the disturbed and mentally challenged to get a gun than buy a cigarette) have me second guessing public spaces.  I make a mental note of possible escape routes when I enter buildings.

Scariest is the danger in school. Normally, school used to be a fairly safe place for most kids. Not so any more. In fact, we're not even talking about crazy, angry people you can second guess. Some recent shootings have been of people you couldn't have guessed.

This is the most scary and disheartening thing about the US today. I wish the delusional Rethugs would come around.

Thanks very much guys. Much love.

Maybe I should I design one of those scenario video games, like ... you are sitting outside eating your lunch and hear a chopper circling above, do you a) go back to work. b) ignore it. c) take a snap of it and hashtag sos heli.

hmm... maybe I should call it nipate games... it could have a kenya politics focus but also other politics focus. It has to be like witty banter with clever and satirical scenarios. i could include ridiculous like alt right loonies still stalking me, Uhuruto shenanigans, might be fun to deconstruct scenarios into a video game. ...

Sorry veritas to hear of this. I haven't been in a situation like this. The only time I got near being killed was after my buddy started beef with a Liberian trapper who called her boyfriend and he tried to kick my buddy while he was down. I intervened and sucker punched him. He ran towards his caddillac and luckily a taxi driver from Senegal came and rescued us from the scene with his taxi. I owe that man my life.
He had a gun in his caddillac and in his drank range ran there to get it. I was told he unwrapped the gun but luckily the club had armed guards who called police making the Looney take off. I was shaken and it took me 2 years before I went back to that club again
