I think Amazon make their money from their cloud services. Although I suspect constantly declaring losses is part of their elaborate tax dodge.

Amazon has divested into innovative outfits and is likely to make it. The core e-commerce is like Uber - but cloud, kindle, echo, etc are stuff with proper utility. Jeff Bezos is also into satellites, rockets and space ventures. Basically the socialites know they are on borrowed time. Facebook is onto whatsapp, video, virtual reality..Even energy. They invest the quick cash into solid ideas.

Do not quote me but as a member of Amazon prime..I think bezo lives and dies in the online shopping altar any other diversification in bullshit and is not what Amazon brand is known for ....Amazon platform is for shop phobias like me who want to buy stuff away from the pressure of sales people and they who hate idea of going to buy things in a brick and mortar..
