Title: Rotational presidency is a terrible idea
Post by: Kichwa Mbaya on September 21, 2014, 08:53:51 PM
I read Nyongo's piece in the standard for rotational presidency and I thought it was the worst idea I have heard in a long time.  I think Okiya's safety in numbers-weighted votes- is a much better idea

The mechanics of a rotational presidency are somewhat complicated from my perch.  The question of what criteria one uses is the one that keeps cropping up.

If Okiya refers to an electoral college kind of thing, that makes sense in a divided country like Kenya.  Electoral college forces one to try and appeal accross a wider cross section of the country.

That said, all these changes are meaningless with an intact IEBC.  I think they should also push for devolved electoral boards.

The panya routes will never work. The current systems is okay except for a weak devolution. We have 50% threshold. You have to win i think 25% in most counties. What we need is stronger devolution to tame the winner take all.Instead of messing up democracy...each of the region or ethnic communities...we should have heavy devolution like in the US..where somebody living in montana desert..doesn't really care about federal gov.

All these are just THIEVES competing for loot. So what we need is to seal loopholes for theft and corruption. Once that is done smart folks will focus on business and politics will be left to orators like in US where real money and celebs are in business, sports and recreation not government. National debate should be about development and wealth creation not how thieves should share public loot.

If loot is going to be stolen either way, I would rather it was stolen closer home. I might get a crumb that falls from the table. Why should we protect the right of th same thieves who've been stealing since independence to keep on doing it? Even in thievery, some fairness.  :D Devolution, baby!

Precisely. The loot should be kept at source. There is chance then of stopping the thief. We need more devolution and eventually full federation. That ensure everyone has a fair chance of looting.

US money being in the private sector is only half true. It is largely public money which is first dumped to the private sector before being shared out. Huge Defense contracts is a case in point. Some of that money ends up generating new money but inevitably goes back to dependence on the source: The American state. Whether as a customer or salesman.

Brynn: You known I cannot argue much with you, but you are spoiling my chances. Listen dear, that option is a defeatist option....it is an option that accepts the problem. I would rather we work out an option that addresses the real issue of tribal differences. I think we can. I can see a situation where we will pick a president based on merit, regardless of gender/tribe/age.

I have to admit though, I get embarrassed

Brynn: OK, you get the last word...you know I have a soft spot for you. You can slap me any time. But on this subject, that idea would be so backword....hope you can trust my judgement on this one. We need to make balanced and thought out decisions for the good of the country.

Sounds good to me. You are a better politician than I am. As for the other jabbing stuff you owe me an explanation sometime in the future. I'm checking out, stay fabulous.
