The Jubilee Party on Saturday called off the Murang’a county election board polls after supporters of some aspirants clashed.
The meeting was meant for the selection of nine board members.
No aspirant was supposed to go in with their supporters. The aspirants were also supposed to leave their vehicles outside the gate and walk in. Police placed a barrier at the gate of the Murang’a Teachers Training College to ensure all aspirants walk in.
But Governor Mwangi Wairia and his supporters removed the barrier and forced their way in. He said police allowed him to be driven into the venue.
Wairia wanted the election called off after he rejected the officials, disrupting the meeting. The governor also claimed some politicians had interfered with the drive. He said some aspirants were not informed about the date and the venue of the meeting.
His main opponent and Kigumo MP Jamleck Kamau walked to the venue. The MP wanted the exercise to go on, saying aspirants had committed their time and resources. He accused the governor of going to the venue with goons.
The disagreement caused a stand-off that lasted for hours. Police dispersed the aspirants using teargas.
Wairia claimed many hopefuls learnt of the selection from others. The governor also said some aspirants left the venue after police teargassed them. “How can they chase people away without proper communication and then say the meeting would go on when many aspirants ran away?” Wairia asked.
Kamau said they had spent the whole day at the venue and it would be a waste of time for it not to go on. He accused some leaders of painting the county in a bad light by causing chaos. “Today was a very bad day for the county. As Murang’a leaders, we should practice mature politics instead of resorting to violence,” Kamau said.
The tension became worse when Leah Ntimama, who was overseeing the exercise, announced the party’s secretary general Raphael Tuju had called off the election to Tuesday. Wairia’s supporters, welcomed the announcement while those backing Kamau rejected it.
Yesterday, Wairia’s camp held a meeting to strategise ahead of the Tuesday meeting.
Kamau said it was unfair the election had been hampered by the actions of a few leaders. He said the aspirants were ready and would still submit the names they had proposed.
But Ntimama said she could not receive the names and left the venue.
She also said she would not oversee the exercise on Tuesday.
