Title: Fake Defections : The Latest Uhuru Kenyatta Campaign Tactic

First it was Wetangula, the Mudavadi and now Kalonzo.

Yesterday he claimed Taita-Taveta Governor had defected. While The Ethnic Rag is correctly reporting that Mruttu is in ODM, it carefully avoids admitting that it was The Nation Media that peddled the LIE in the first place. The mainstream media has not recognized the danger it finds itself in. When those so called reporters start going home unemployed, it will be too late to make job-saving changes.

The Opposition has rallies planned in the region. Let's see then how many of the those "defectors" really defected:

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and his Taita Taveta counterpart John Mruttu have dismissed as inconsequential the recent defections of opposition leaders from the Coast to the Jubilee Party.

Speaking when they met ODM aspirants in Voi Town on Wednesday night, the two said those who defected did not have the interests of the people at heart.

The defectors, they said, are now supporting a government that has failed to solve problems facing Coast residents.

They cited the example of the creation of a dry port in Voi Town under the Vision 2030 project, which they claimed is now being relocated to Naivasha.

However, President Kenyatta, while on a visit to Voi last Saturday said plans to build a dry port in the town are still on.

The port, he said, will create jobs for locals and boost the economy.

Governor Joho, who had a spat with President Kenyatta on Monday, said he will not be intimidated to stop “talking the truth”.

Mr Joho and Mr Mruttu asked the aspirants to campaign vigorously for ODM leader Raila Odinga whom they said should be Nasa’s flag-bearer.

Mr Odinga, they said, is best placed to tackle President Kenyatta.

The two governors told aspirants to accept the outcome of the ODM primaries, support the winners and observe decorum in their campaigns.

"You should identify a polling station, where supporters are in charge of a station, ensure there is an agent, there is food, county clerks, phone to record every incident and results," Mr Joho said.

The senator mwazo (sp) and some mps defected. Mwazo (Raila's minister) is going to face Mrutu.

All Senators want to be Governors. Mwazo wanted Raila to favor him over Mruttu. That was not forthcoming. He has opted to cause trouble instead by taking Jubilee money and running. He has no chance.

Lay's wife (she is Bukusu) is said to have defected. Needless to say if true, she will be joining her wealthy white husband in retirement.

By now people know defectors are a meaningless yardstick for popularity.   They wont change the tribal arithmetic unless they are one of the big fishes.

Defections used to mean a lot immediately after Independence and after the repeal of  Section 2A of the constitution in December 1991.

It has slowly lost value as Tumbocracy shaped up to become an ideology.

As of now Kenya is fully tribal. Those who can mobilize their tribes can probably command 70% of the votes. Note that whether there is a civil war (the requisite historical condition for shaping a modern Nation), tribe as a unit is endangered. It will die not because of slogans and appeals (Uwiyano or some such NGO thing) but because the middle class (which was a US and later European thing after WW2)is growing and expanding to and within Africa, Kenya included.

Policies and votes will be determined by how they will affect the family pocket not the tribe.

As of now Uhuru re-election is not even fifty-fifty. If you held elections today he would lose and try a Kibaki(2007). I see the defections and reversing accusations about hacking etc as part o0f the preparations for a possible Kibaki.
