The discussion on robots reminded me that a few years ago Sanyo was looking into resurrecting an idea it had in the 1970s ... patented, built prototypes, etc. The idea was to do to be able to do for humans what a "normal" washing machines does for clothes. Didn't get far, but, with an increasingly aging population, the idea seems to be back. Supposedly, you would be able to throw your grandmother into one of these things, choose appropriate settings for the lady, turn the thing on, and then go off to do other things while grandma got soaped, scrubbed, rinsed, and dried. Massage optional.
I'm not absolutely sure, but I think this "sample" from 1999 is also from Sanyo:

He, he, he ... this is a place where anything more than a pen-knife is more trouble that it's worth---samurai swords excepted, for "religious" reasons and on no-use conditions. Here's a sad but somewhat amusing one: A few years ago, a dead police officer was put on trial. Charge: improper use of a firearm. Said use: suicide. Official justification: an example for the citizens, to reinforce the importance of adhering to the rules and regulations on the use of firearms.
American gunslingers (Windy City Assassin), Baringo bandits (my RV friend) ... could learn something from that. :o

Japan should just open its borders. At the rate their population is growing and aging, the only thing left in the country will machines.
