Mr. Trump praises Kazakhstan’s
leader for “fantastic success.”
Why it matters
Mr. Trump praised Nursultan A. Nazarbayev, the president of Kazakhstan since 1991, in tones that suggest approval for Mr. Nazarbayev’s strongman rule. According to the Kazakh government’s readout of the call, Mr. Trump “stressed that under the leadership of Nursultan Nazarbayev, our country over the years of independence had achieved fantastic success that can be called a ‘miracle.’”

Mr. Trump accepts an invitation to
visit Pakistan, “a terrific country.”
Why it matters
Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif invited Mr. Trump to visit, according to a Pakistani government readout of their call. Should Mr. Trump follow through, he risks alienating India, which sees Pakistan as a major antagonist, and appearing to reward Pakistan’s behavior; should he renege, he risks upsetting Pakistani leaders who are sensitive about perceived American intransigence. Either way, the call could upset the delicate balance of India-Pakistan ties, which the U.S. has struggled to manage amid a history of wars and recent skirmishes.
The President of Taiwan CALLED ME today to wish me congratulations on winning the Presidency. Thank you!

Interesting how the U.S. sells Taiwan billions of dollars of military equipment but I should not accept a congratulatory call.

Chinese diplomat: Trump call a Taiwan 'shenanigan' (http://edition.cnn.com/2016/12/02/politics/donald-trump-taiwan/)
China's top diplomat called the controversial phone call between President-elect Donald Trump and Taiwan's President "a shenanigan by the Taiwan side."
"it won't at all change the 'one China' structure that the international community has agreed upon," Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Saturday when he was asked about the call on the sidelines of a foreign policy seminar.
"I don't think it will change the 'one China' policy that U.S. administrations have adhered to over the years. The 'one China' policy is the cornerstone of a healthy China-U.S. relationship. I hope this political foundation won't be disrupted or damaged."
Trump on Friday chatted with the Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, who passed along her congratulations,Trump's transition team said.
"During the discussion, they noted the close economic, political, and security ties exists between Taiwan and the United States. President-elect Trump also congratulated President Tsai on becoming President of Taiwan earlier this year."
But the exchange threatened to anger China even before he takes office.
The chat marks the first publicly reported call between a US President or President-elect and the leader of Taiwan since Washington established diplomatic relations with Beijing in 1979, said Bonnie Glaser, a China expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
The telephone call is certain to incense China, which considers Taiwan a renegade province. It is the first major sign of the unpredictability that Trump has vowed to bring to long-held US relations with the rest of the world.

By Friday night, China had already reached out to the Obama administration. White House officials declined to comment on diplomatic discussions.
I think its Trump team which will be making key strategic decisions.... All eyes ought to focus on the technocrats that trump will bring forth.
Trump wants to expand business empire to Taiwan, creating another potential conflict of interest (http://shanghaiist.com/2016/11/18/trump_taiwan_expand.php)
The mayor of Taoyuan confirmed rumors on Wednesday that US president-elect Donald Trump was considering constructing a series of luxury hotels and resorts in the northwest Taiwanese city.
A representative from the Trump Organization paid a visit to Taoyuan in September, expressing interest in the city's Aerotropolis, a large-scale urban development project aimed at capitalizing on Taoyuan's status as a transport hub for East Asia, Taiwan News reports. With the review process for the Aerotropolis still underway, Taoyuan's mayor referred to the subject of the meeting as mere investment speculation. Other reports indicate that Eric Trump, the president-elect's second son and executive vice president of the Trump Organization, will be coming to Taoyuan later this year to discuss the potential business opportunity.

Unfortunately, Trump will be the one calling the shots. For example, his call with Taiwan, pissing off the Chinese, is all about Trump:QuoteTrump wants to expand business empire to Taiwan, creating another potential conflict of interest (http://shanghaiist.com/2016/11/18/trump_taiwan_expand.php)

There is that. But also Republicans take no prisoners. They have no sense of shame or hypocrisy. But white privilege being rubbed in our faces is starting to get old fast.
Just tried watching Saturday Night Live - unwatchable! Totally biased, not funny and the Baldwin impersonation just can't get any worse. Sad

Beyond the usual rhetoric that the CCP’s credibility is contingent on the leadership’s ability to consolidate the Chinese nation is also the fact that Taiwan’s democracy remains a dangerous contradiction for authoritarian China, one that must either be destroyed entirely or downgraded to a level that no longer threatens the CCP. Taiwan’s vibrant, albeit imperfect democracy and its internalization by the nation’s 23 million people is the reason why Beijing’s “one country two systems” offer to Taiwan — the best it has made to date — has had little appeal among Taiwanese. Its rhetoric notwithstanding, the CCP understands how unappealing its offer has been to Taiwanese, even among the many who vote for the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT). If Beijing’s flirting is ever to be taken seriously by Taiwan, it will have to make a significantly more generous offer, perhaps something like a federalist system - See more at: http://thinking-taiwan.com/preparing-unification/#sthash.apKEgrjr.dpuf
