Title: Rodrigo Duterte, the Filipino Donald Trump, is leading the presidential election
Post by: Real P on April 18, 2016, 07:10:27 AM
He was in the news a couple days ago for joking about how he'd liked to have been first to rape a woman who was raped to death, but it turns out there's much worse to him.

Quote
Rodrigo Duterte, a presidential candidate in the Philippines, was criticised on Sunday after a video surfaced of him apparently joking about a murdered Australian rape victim.

Duterte, who promises the mass extermination of suspected criminals if he is elected next month, appears in a video uploaded on YouTube making remarks about the Australian missionary.

Jacqueline Hamill was working in a prison in Davao in the southern Philippines when she was raped and killed during a riot by inmates in 1989. Duterte was the city’s mayor at the time.

“They raped all of the women … There was this Australian lay minister … when they took them out … I saw her face and I thought: ‘Son of a bitch. what a pity … they raped her, they all lined up. I was mad she was raped but she was so beautiful. I thought, the mayor should have been first,” Duterte is shown telling a crowd of laughing supporters at a campaign rally.

Duterte, who boasts about the extrajudicial killings of suspects by vigilantes during his time in Davao, is leading in the run up to the 9 May election, according to the latest opinion poll published on 3 April.

When he was mayor of Davao he praised and encouraged the Davao Death Squads. He would go on TV and announce the name of suspected criminals, who would then be murdered by the DDS.

Quote
"Summary execution of criminals remains the most effective way to crush kidnapping and illegal drugs"

Quote
“If you are doing an illegal activity in my city, if you are a criminal or part of a syndicate that preys on the innocent people of the city, for as long as I am the mayor, you are a legitimate target of assassination."

Quote
Referring to the arrest of a suspected rice smuggler, Duterte spoke out in the state senate saying, "If this guy would go to Davao and starts to unload (smuggled rice)… I will gladly kill him."

The Human Rights Watch did an investigation on him and said there was enough evidence to file murder charges.

Quote
Duterte publicly admitted his direct links to the Davao death squad during a May 24 live broadcast of his weekly television talk show. “Am I the death squad? True. That is true,”

Over a 1000 people were killed by the DDS.

Regarding the mass extermination of criminals comments he wants to execute people even for lesser crimes, boasting that if he comes to power he will execute 100,000 criminals under his administration and that human rights for criminals is a "Western concept".

His ascension in the polls is relatively new though. 5 different polls put him first starting from late March.

Oh, and he doubled down on his rape comments:

Quote
“It was not a joke. I said it in a narrative,” he said. “I was very angry when I spoke. I said: ‘Sons of whores, she is as pretty as an American movie star. They got to her before me. So kill them all’.”

Will it hurt him? Well...

Quote
Even when he called Pope Francis a “son of a whore” in a speech last November, his followers in the devoutly Catholic country quickly forgave him.

I know Wikipedia might not be a trustable/reliable source, but reading about him on other sources. He basically did what a gang leader does after acquiring monopoly over a territory, impose peace on a community, in this case the city he ruled. So I say plainly he's a criminal no matter the results he achieved or motives why he did it, how many innocents died in his "cleansing"?

He is a bully like the Donald

Separatist and criminal gangs are a real problem in the Philippines hence the support. People vote for the demon slayers when their system is threatened. The threat can be real or imaginary.

Look what happened in Poland, Hungary, etc in recent elections. Polish leader claimed immigrants will bring "strange diseases", declared "Christian Republic of Poland" and still won big.

Let's hope this Phillipine populist has more sense than his loudmouth.

He is pretty much the Philippine version of Trump, an anti-establishment campaigner, waging a war on criminals (particularly, drugs, since it is apparently a national issue). He is still leading surveys despite of what he has been saying and an anti-establishment but unlike Trump he will probably win.

Sometimes it is hard to explain how most of the population thinking process work. For instance, the Mongols who still hold Genghis Khan in a quite high regard despite he was the destroyer of civilizations. The guy was responsible, either directly or indirectly, for the deaths of tens of millions of people, plus the irreparable destruction of countless cities, regions and cultures, some of which were the most glorious in the world. He was among the greatest villains in history and pretty much killed every enemy who stood above the height of a wagon wheel and while he is the only person on the Mongolian tugrik for all denominations starting from 500.

I highly doubt. He appeals to many because he speaks his mind in a completely uncensored manner.

Trump is not really fascist unlike this Dulette calling for execution of common criminals.

Trump reminds me of London Mayor Boris Johnson, very charged fellow full of racist, gay, women gaffes who still remains popular and unscathed. Boris is a pop TV showman who spots a Trump hair that seem to peacock ladies despite his unchecked off-the-cuffs, affairs, scandals, what-nots.

BoJo's popular gaffes :

Oh, BoJo is leading Brexit campaign and is top contender for next PM. Another Trump -- "conservative" charmer with liberal flip flops depending on the audience at hand.

People were just fed up with the various ruling dynasties and opted for the guy promising to do something about Crime and Poverty. You could see plain exhaustion.

On the other hand, he has gotten a bad press as part of his own spin dances. Instead of denying things and making them dangerous he admits in a Lawyer-ly manner (ensuring there is no legal basis to prosecute him while to the ordinary ear it sounds like a real admission) thus killing it. That is how he silenced or pacified the stories about death squads.

The Filipinos were looking for a tough guy. He played to that, even speaking of raping an Australian. The backlash from this remark made him more popular as Australia is not popular in the country especially with the mistreatment of Filipinos working there and those trying to enter illegally.

Duterte is certainly more contentious than your typical politician. He is like the Donald. One calls Mexicans rapists; the other jokes about gang rape. One vows to build a wall at the Mexican border; the other threatens to “butcher” criminals. Both have used stump speeches to brag about the size of their manhood. And both have had rows with the Pope. They are both alpha males. Duterte's tough-on-crime mantra, his promise to tackle widespread corruption, as well as the poverty and inequality experienced by many Filipinos despite economic growth under outgoing President propelled him to presidency.
