It's better than being dragged into court which is itself dysfunctional
-
Far better...and gov will get more revenues..although our thoroughly corrupt traffic cops will still game this.

If they can have MPesha arrangement then the better. On corrupt traffic police just enforce a fire on spot for anyone caught soliciting bribes and jail term for the briber
-
A "noble" effort but ultimately of dubious worth: technology cannot make up for moral deficits in humans, and the NYS case (with the fancy computer systems) is more than sufficient to prove this. Here, consider this as an example
A fine of Sh7,000 will apply to those driving without a valid driving licence [sic] in respect of the class of vehicle they are trained for
What happens when the copper says "you can pay the Sh. 7,000 to GoK or you can pay me Sh. 3,000 here and now"?
Globalcitizen12 suggests that
On corrupt traffic police just enforce a fire on spot for anyone caught soliciting bribes and jail term for the bribe
Setting aside the legal issues that would be involved with "fire on the spot", how many coppers soliciting bribes ever face any real consequences (e.g. serious court cases)?
Corruption in Kenya will continue as long as those at the top continue to "lead" full-steam-ahead. The small fish are only following the examples that they see.

technology is the best hope of dealing with corruption ...the trail of money is easy to track... IFMIS has so much information that there is no need for trips to CID or EACC or perusal of thousands of files... police vetting MPesa statements
-
This is terrible. The police already stop vehicles for no reason other than to collect a bribe. It should be mandatory for all police officers in Kenya to wear a surveillance device.
-
veritas,
Kenyan police has no budget for cameras, the force can barely keep water running in officers barracks. We just need very vigilant supervisory system and internal mechanism of whistle blowing to at least reduce graft

Yes, the trail is easy to track. But how exactly does it help in dealing with corruption if nothing is then done? IFMIS appears to have had "tracks" on the NYS scams. Excellent. Has any of the tracked money been returned? Has anybody been taken to court? Is there the slightest hint that the use of IFMIS has deterred anyone from their usual looting? What corruption has been "dealt" with?

Omg, the camera is like $5. I'm releasing my little kits in a couple weeks, and it'll be like less then $20 DIY surveillance camera using wifi tech buttoned to your shirt. That's like dirt cheap investment for constant visual stream monitoring.
I welcome anyone to purchase my little kits.
Check this out. I'm trying to replicate this.
-
Veritas,
These guys have no vehicles and you are talking cameras?
It may be $5 but they will need techies to administer these devices + Waigurus to take a cut thus inflating the actual price.
-
When did a vehicle cost less than $5 ? You know what would be an interesting investment? Mini surveillance cameras hooked outside police vehicles without police knowing. Constant video feed. Put it on youtube. Expose corruption.
-
Los Angeles Police just handed out body cameras to its first patrol division at the end of August. Why not Kenyan Police? I believe policemen/women should have no control over the cameras while on duty, video should be available to the public for review without a request and recordings of all official public duties should be recorded or evidence can be considered hearsay. That is my prerogative

Exactly.

veritas,
Kenya police service is so poor and in bad shape that it needs about $3 billion dollars to upgrade its infrastructure. Most of the police stations have no working radio communication. So where will the videos be hosted? who will provide the servers and storage that is need to store all the videos? As of now what Kenya needs to is pay cops well then just fire the dead wood.
On corruption it can only end when the cost benefit of losing a job is higher.

You sound like a typical mwafrika (excuses after excuses).
Devolve Police departments and give multimillion shilling tenders to the best bidder and problem solved. Veritas is willing to provide a cheap out body cameras to Police departments that are willing to fight corruption.
-
You need to amend constitution to be able to devolve police. Veritas is not willing to give cameras but she is willing to sell them. Corruption can be fought by proper supervision and accountability ..internal and external police oversight can work ..I think kehnsta is arresting corrupt traffic police and this is having an impact

When did "cheap", mean free. I don't think ehnsta is doing enough. Anyway, Kenyan constitution is warped, and need a change or greasepaint and not shill-shallying. That said, I hope the Central government can devolve the police departments

Government won't devolve security because that is aGainst the law

Understood sir/ma'am.
I thought Kenya’s 2010 constitution mirrored US and offered a new wrinkle intended to overcome this legislative lethargy. Here in America, they have devolved all local counties securities except for federal government.

I have a master security licence in NSW endorsed by the police and yes we've designed, installed, maintained security in public/govt/diplomat homes and offices. Security as in every day security in public premises are handled by private firms. This includes law enforcement security. Police have security firms look after stations. We've even done security installations for the defense force, airport, navy. However govts are poor, still a public povo service, most of our ludicrous security contracts are Arab clients who have so many investments going in Oz like hotel chains in the middle of nowhere, private airstrips, private islands I kid you not, my dad designed & inatalled for a private island. Engineers in the army/police are young and stupid. Do you honstly think the govt leaves such matters to inexperienced dunderheads? They don't. So what in goodness names does this have to do with devolution?
-
Dad used to tell me how depressing govt projects were. In early days he did lots of public/govt tenders but then stopped. Like they asked him to do Christmas Island. He pulled out shortly after because he felt home sick and the place was sick according to him. Govt projects are depressing from the stories he told me. He was much happier with Arab clients like the magnificent high rises in Dubai (he's done work there), to challenging offshore oil rigs, to challenging eco modern hotel chains. I used to help him with decorating christmas lights at shopping centers like Westfield chains. A "side" job for me. As a little girl I'd piece together the power plugs like daisy chains. The chains just wouldn't stop. Thousands upon thousands of lights. I remember crying because I couldn't finish it after weeks even with other staff helping me. Still hadn't finished and due in a day. Dad told me it was ok. I woke up the next morning and it was all done. Dad had stayed up all night and completed it.
-
Veritas,
Why Devolution you ask? Because we proponents of devolution belief that with a devolved police force accountability will be better. A police chief answerable to local elected officials will be more responsive than an appointee only answerable to corrupt inept central command in Nairobi or county headquarters. Corruption can only be fought bottom up. Minimize corruption at lower ranks of police command and then the funds going up the chain will dry.
On cameras let me know how you envision this working in Kenya in places where we lack even the basic communication technology? These cameras will function only in urban areas
. By the way sell me a kit and I can install it in my home to be able to supervise my employees remotely. Inbox me details .. I need to install them in two commercial properties
-
GC, I'll send you two for free. I'm still working on it. I'll let you know when I'm happy with it. I've managed to make with expensive hardware and sophisticated coding, but now I'm trying to make one using cheap parts, simple coding. You may also want to experiment yourself. Google "smart cities" "IoT"
-
thanks.. I will google.. I am very handicapped when it comes to putting stuff together but my nephew is a techie so he will be able to help. So what products do you have that can be sold in Kenyan market?
-
:D
You don't have to put my kits together. It's premade and you just need to copy and paste code. Also open source meaning you can do whatever with it.
It'll make more sense when I upload on website.
-
cool when you talk about code for us non techies we get scared
-
...ok. Back in the old day we used to "program" and write "code" from scratch. Java, C++ I recall staring at the screen for weeks stuck on a script. Thank goodness today there's so much documentation & open source. Copy and paste everything.
You've used "code" by posting here. This forum uses html, java, sql, php, BBC code.

I just met a business partner from SA. He was lamenting how he wants to get into the energy business in Zimbabwe .. his idea is to get lights that can be powered by batteries or solar for cheap that can substitute erratic power grid in Zimbabwe. Do you know of any quality affordable thing for such work. We can move this to inbox so that we do not ruining this thread
to us layman on Code we are ignorant we just press buttons
