Title: Kenyan Police Set A New Low
Post by: MOON Ki on October 21, 2015, 12:14:53 AM
Even by their own questionable "standards", this is going way too far:

Quote
Disgrace of Ruaraka cops' crimes against girl

There were multiple crimes and wrongs committed by adults in the case of the 13-year-old girl detained for two weeks for allegedly stealing Sh1,000 from her employer, raped upon release and rearrested when she reported the crime. Half a dozen instances of wrongdoing will suffice.

The ‘employer’ should be arrested, including on a charge of child labour; the police should not have held the child that long; rape victims should be taken to hospital not to the police cells, where they “recuperate” by sleeping on cold cement floors; out-of-court settlements of serious crimes, including rape, arbitrated by lay people should end – receiving cash in lieu of justice is a nonsense.

Finally, the OCS who threatened a journalist who covered the case by vowing to quit the Police Service so that he can deal with him as “a civilian” has uttered a death threat and should be prosecuted.

What happened to the Gender Desk at police stations, including the Ruaraka station?

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet needs to take action against the officers of the Ruaraka police station, including the ones that purportedly man the phantom Gender Desk. The National Police Service should show that something remedial is happening. They must not wait for IPOA in this disgraceful case.

Have you seen the show on Kenyan TV about the cops in Boni forest?  I forget the name.  Without excusing the behavior, I see Kenyan police as partly victims.

Equipped with nothing but the standard boot camp training in Kiganjo they are then thrown into the deep end.  Often having to deal with situations neither their training nor aptitude prepares them for.

In situations like this case, it's Wanjiku who bears the brunt.

Government's failure to enforce the nation's child protection laws is a "national disgrace". It just leaves abused children vulnerable to future harm. Then we have member of parliament representatives like Ababu Namwamba impregnating high school girls
