When I was there it felt like there was so much surveillance and cops so I'm not understanding why their murder rates are getting higher. Is it from police brutality? Too many good lawyers? Too much focus on terrorist policies and not enough on neighborhood policing? It's not adding up.

When I was in Baltimore during those riots, I could feel the next wave of murders and knew I had to get out of there.

It's the natural course after a violent protest - murders.
I think it's also a cultural shift. So many movies and video games are way too violent. I watched the movie "Drive" tonight and was disturbed with the neck stabbing. It reminds me of what Foucault wrote. Power decentralized between bodies. Technological bodies. I'm seeing a future with narcissistic heartless individuals killing with no remorse. There's just no moral compass anymore in today's dog eat dog rat race. Saddens me.
Does someone have access to this website? I want to look at the data.

I think it's been going down. The reporting has increased though.

Well, you're from Chicago could you even tell the difference? :)

If I look at the statistics, sure. But on the ground, it's the same old stuff. I am more worried about my flu right now. My whole body is aching.

You should be feeling empowered since those riots. Black lives matter.
Flu? That's bad. Sorry to hear. Forget herbal tea. What works for me is a vitamin C tab 1000mg.

I have often thought that way. But guns are freely available in some Scandinavian country, I forget which. But nothing near the US murder rates. Granted it's probably still much much easier to get one in the US, including things like M16, AK47...
Then I thought it must be gang violence related in the inner cities. But even if you eliminate that, it's still significantly higher than other developed countries. You still have the Columbines, movie theater shootings, the ocassional mall attack, church attack, temple attack etc. in very nice pristine neghborhoods.
So it's not gun availability, and eliminating inner city gangs still leaves a surplus relative to OECD. I am thinking it's partially cultural and genetic. They value toughness over kindness. A testosterone culture. The US has never elected a woman to the WH for instance.

I just took a long nap after confirming the bubonic plague has not been reported in my backyard. It's still restricted somewhere in Michigan.

No joking. I am just now getting back to normal.

So it's not gun availability ....
That might be so. Still I'd rather have the Japanese approach:
“Of course, guns don’t kill people; people kill people — guns just make it a lot easier to kill a lot of people. That’s why Japan bans them and that’s why my job was catching people with guns and putting them in jail. Usually, long before they could ever put their finger on the trigger.”
And laws are very strictly enforced:
“A few years ago, an officer on duty used his gun to kill himself — clearly non-designated usage, so that’s a crime.” He was charged posthumously to publicly show that even the dead can’t get away with breaking the firearms laws, and to shame his family. It may seem like overkill but it drives home the point.
