This may mean we will see the SGR in Nairobi sooner than we imagined.

How can they do this? Pple had speculated on huge sums of land.
Speculators will eventually kill Kenya.

There is an option they are not exploring: Using a Tunnel from Athi River under the airport and then they are free to route it any way they want as long as it surfaces in Nairobi city.
The tunnel can continue to join the old Limuru Tunnel and may be extend to Naivasha to cater for the future expansion of the city to Naivasha. That way they leave the animals free and they use the money they would have given land thieves in Mlolongo (they stole a widows land) to finance the tunnel and stations - especially the one at JKIA.
I also think there should be a special concession to run the railway between the Airport and the City with connections to Karen - Thika and Naivasha

Interesting. But from Salama to Athi River there is lots of expensive development so land acquisition will be a challenge. The railway has to pass deep inside Kajiado plains and sneak into National Park.

Tunnel is too expensive. Built a bridge. All they need are air rights and buy land to erect posts. Not as expensive.

The Tunnel has the advantage that once deep underground, you do not pay compensation and you are free to route it any direction you wish.
Ity would also lay the foundation to a commercial underground transport as well as road tunnels to take most traffic under the under utilized city underbelly. If you re-route just two of the main roads say - Mombasa - Naivasha; Karen - Thika - underground I doubt you would see any traffic jams in Nairobi.
Any vehicle going either direction would find the nearest entry and sink underground. I want to think it is cheaper in the long term.

It's quite odd that such a mega project's route is not yet set in stone. Wouldn't the diversion eventually cost a lot more than flattening muthama heights?

The Americans have contributed much colour to the English language. They would, I imagine, describe this one as a "fly by night" or "winging it". Still, on such a project, the English would be more pithy: "I'll be buggered!". And buggering is exactly what the Kenyan taxpayers are getting on this one.

Maybe If you read slowly you'd understand the project has encountered head winds due to land acquisition problems. These kinds of things are 101 in any project. The Chinese as always will deliver on time and cost. They are promising to deliver this by next year. Of course stuff like court case might drag it on.

Rule number moja of mega projects is that you don't break ground until all land is secured and all concessions settled.
