CORD leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday implored Nyali MP Hezron Awiti to tone down his onslaught on the Mombasa county government and Governor Hassan Joho.
Raila is unhappy with the manner in which the two leaders are attacking each other and feels the rivalry could threaten his fourth stab at the presidency in 2017.
After jetting into Mombasa on Tuesday afternoon ahead of the Iftar dinner hosted by Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar later in the evening at Fort Jesus, Raila went to Awiti’s house in Nyali, where the former Prime Minister met elders from the Luo community. "Raila recognizes Joho as the Governor of Mombasa untill 2017.
“He told Awiti to stop attacking the Mombasa county government as it is a Cord government. ‘Actually, he told Awiti to give Joho the space to serve Mombasa residents for now. He wants Awiti to at least start his campaigns in 2017,” said a source familiar with the meeting at the MP’s house.
Awiti sat pensively as he listened to the ‘lecture’ from the former PM, according to sources. However, Awiti is said to have downplayed Raila's concerns as his personal opinion, which he said he respects. He told his confidants that he will consider Raila's concerns but vowed not to abandon his gubernatorial bid. However, a section of the Luo elders at the meeting said Raila has double standards.
