More than 30 motorists were Friday penalised and some vehicles impounded for traffic offences along the busy Mombasa-Nairobi Highway at Mariakani.

This followed a crackdown on traffic offenders carried out by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

NTSA Deputy Director Cosmas Ngeso said there have been many cases of traffic violations during the 2014 Christmas season, with offenders being penalised between Sh5,000 and Sh10,000.

Speaking to the Nation, Mr Ngeso said despite an increase in the number of vehicles on Kenyan roads, there has been a reduction in the number of road accidents.

“This is a joint exercise between the NTSA and the traffic police. We started at the beginning of December 2014 and we are continuing with the crackdown.

“The intention of this operation is to monitor compliance with traffic laws and taking action on traffic offenders.

“We are checking on speed, drink driving, route violation, overloading and all manner of offences that the Traffic Act disallows,” he said.
