Two prominent and wealthy politicians have passed on recently. Stanley Munga Githunguri( The owner of Lilian Towers/ Nairobi Safari Club) and Matu Wamae ( the owner of Ngong Hills Hotel), among other property scattered across the country. There has been no sense of national or collective mourning for these politicians, save for family and friends. This author says he lives in the neighbourhood of Kibichiku in Lower Kabete where the late Charles Njonjo owned over 100 acres of prime land in an environment of scarcity. Njonjo is a lost memory in this neighbourhood, at best invoking a sense of anger and bitterness to most. This is in total contrast to the memories of the likes of Chelagat Mutai, Wangari Maathai, Karimi nduthu, Bildad Kaggia, Field Marshal Bamuinge, among others, simple, humble and patriotic souls whose memories we collectively cherish and strive to emulate, even naming our children after them.
