Lol, RVHH has never taken pombe or associated with anyone abusing it. You remind me of when Mr. Otieno accused me of using Bhang in High School for consistently getting 100/100 in physics and Chemistry, quizzes, tests, Cats, Mocks, etc., from form one to form 4! It hurt my feelings for years because I hate drugs and anything destructive with passion. I have always wanted to know what I got in KCSE because they were both A, and I am sure it must have been 100/100! An award-winning brain! Years later, I had 3.9 GPA on my IT Masters degree, and 20 A's on all my Ph.D! classes! My brain is simply lethal!

You sound like an illeterate who think IT is computer packages.
IT or comp sci is where innovation and thinking has been happening the last few decades.
And it's most rewarding - as it involve solving real problems on a daily basis - that can bring in real money.
Most billionaires have IT background.
Even locally idiots like Ndichu were swimming in money for doing crap.

The bible of comp science is definitely the Art of Programming by Donald Knuth - if you can read and understand even 1/4 of it - you'll be on you way to Silicon valley to earn top dollar. Programmers in some top companies now get a signing fee. Salaries start from even a million dollars plus lots of stock option.

Typical starting salaries in Silicon valley is 200K usd per annum - for entry level coders. I cannot think of another more rewarding career intellectually and financially

Most probably RVHH got an overseas scholarship, let him tell us his story.
And I also did IT pre university and IT as a unit in my university years .

You should have asked that without making it appear like A student doing IT is queer.
That is the part I am talking about.
RvHH lives in California - I cannot think of a more rewarding career than working in Silicon Valley for someone with IT background.

He has a story behind it . Let him narrate . You narrated yours . In early 2000s it was lucrative course . You told us they used to call you computer in High school and you were inspired by the telekom guy . Thats fine let RVHH tell us his inspiration .

Eddy project in KCB was a big one , KCB managed to get a breakthrough in the mpesa/mshwari/fuliza market which was being dominated by CBA. You should hear the story . I mean i respect IT all these Fintech is basically IT run.
Now you and RVHH can you make some silicon valley somewhere in Kenya . You have the influence and experience ama ?

I am sure he has a story - I only come in to correct the notion that A student ought not to study IT. You sounded like my father in the 90s who told me the same. I have schooled and worked with very brilliant people who studied IT. Telkom guy in high school was Dr Rono - ICT authority CEO in kenya - I think he was in 1st batch of Comp sci of UON - in 1998 - the idiot Mucheru tried to fire him after election. He is one who got me interested in comp science though I still had to deal with my father - who insisted I change course to the very last minute - when we accidently met another neighberhor - one chirchir cousin who had just graduated - and told me my father it was best career move - then he budged.

If you ask me today - if you're good in STEM - I'd definitely recommend a career in software engineering.

Right now there is lot of money coming in -  3.2B dollars to africa in six month this year - about 400M dollars to kenya - money is flowing to tech startups. All you need is good head - and good mouth - and you could be swimming in money.

The likes of microsoft and google are desceding to kenya - and hiring and paying small kids MP salary right in Nairobi - without a lot of people hanging around you.

Hey Nowayhaha, and Pundit-Here is my little story. 8-4-4 did us a disservice because SM (Science & Math) was not complete STEM, and even with that, SM was not robust as it should be in the global marketplace. ALL 8-4-4 finishers had no iota of Technology and engineering when they left form four or grade 12. Kenya let us down, and it is still doing it! I remember doing my first assignment in Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, two years after graduating high school! It was a complete horror story when a Nandi man from deep in the village met face-to-face with a computer!. Like most African students, I was embarrassed every time I had to go to the computer library to type the English 101 essay. I was dubbed the guy that stabs the keyboard because of the way I was using two index fingers to type! Wazungu used to shoulder-surf me to see how I could type a two-page of a word document in about 4 hours. I was a dinosaur in my early college years. when I compare myself to my kids in High school and middle school; now doing robotics, coding, computer discoveries, and cybersecurity courses and typing over 60 words per minute, I just cringe! CBC should reform and go complete 80% STEM because that is the future of interconnected global market place!
I decided then I wanted to learn about Technology, so I tried to abort the Economic degree I was pursuing then. As an international student with I-20, I couldn't change, so I decided to finish my Economics degree before switching to the Technology arena. In the US, tech careers are recession-proof and can lead one to work smart in a 9-5 environment. I'm not a guy that likes to kill myself working, so I tend to pursue avenues/businesses that keep me working about 2-4 hours a day and making the salary of someone working 12 hours a day! I believe after 40, someone should work smart instead of working hard. Careers in Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Information Security, Day trading, and related fields can take you to that realm quicker!
Also, you must pursue exciting and consistently evolving things, like Technology; above all, you seek something that pays bills honestly. I have achieved a lot in IT and day trading. Still, I will be way happier when I get the approval for my ongoing dissertation in Information security, where I'm researching Deep learning use in intrusion detection systems and flaws past researchers made. Doing scholarly research in a traditional five-chapter dissertation by someone technical in the field is not easy, especially when you hit the statistics and have to quit Technology first to learn the Kendall-Tau-b correlation coefficient for months. Anyone with a Ph.D. in hard Stem, especially in Technology related fields of -Software engineering, Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, etc., should be respected! They are back-breaking, and that is why my back is taking a beating now.

RVHH,You should have seen our struggles as comp sci students using computers for first time while learning programming and automata at the same time. The first semster I thought many times about quiting. Those who had done IMIS diploma (most at Strathmore) after high school (there was 2yrs waiting time) were showing us dust. I survived...some didnt...my friend from Bomet...after Automata CAT...went to the dean...and demanded to be taken back to BCOM...or he would quit...I didnt find him hostels...he left for Kabete.That most brutal course in 1st year 1st semster, I still recall my first programming class - here we are - we dont even know how to use computer- we were similarly typing for hours - and the lecturer - come for practical - and say can you RUN the program. I couldnt wrap the idea of running and computers. I was half expecting to see folks physically run out of the computer lab.
Anyway, the most hilarious were the guys who changed courses to comp sci....that was like two-three weeks after we reported - so we also could watch their struggles - one Luo dude - typed an assignment for long - he was persistence (and so were many of us) - but he didnt know how to save the document - so it disappeared - and he caused a scene wondering where it's gone. We asked him if he saved - he said he was typing and the text was going up up....scrolling upwards...so he thought it was being saved. Then we had internet - and we didnt even know which sites to browse - I discovered RCBOWEN - the famous forum from a Nation newspaper article - I was ferocious reader of anything political - and went searching for it. But boy we know about porn and watched them in the school lab :). Those secretaries saw dust...because some guys didnt know how to close the windows fast....so would be found nabbing. One guy just told the secretary - mind your own business. I remember a meru guy who was doing Metrological degree but would sneak in computer school lab - with 100 diskettes - to copy porn. That was one determined soul. I think he had desktop in his hostel. We started buying desktop in our 2nd year - mostly - they were clones from westland -Mistumi house - but there no internet on the hostels - so you had to carry lot of floppy disks - then CDS came - then USB at our final year. One dude got 100MB usb gift from Dubai...and it was amazing how fast you could copy and carry stuff. We've come far.
