Elected women leaders should do more to address violence against women or quit, Kilimani Mums, that organized the #MyDressMyChoice demonstration, has said.

The demonstration is ongoing at Freedom Corner in Central Park, Nairobi.

The remark concerns the stripping of a woman by alleged Embassava Sacco matatu touts for being indecently dressed

I am glad women are speaking up against this barbarism. I don’t know when this was okay anywhere in the world in broad daylight.

When you start abusing and oppressing the weak, you have just wasted the last 500,000 years of Darwinian Evilution on primates

I'm in solidarity with the demonstrators. If I was there I'd go even a step further and rip the pants off matatu touts. Shame on them.

its not OK anywhere
Both men and women who were standing and watching as it happened are guilty
If some women who was there started screaming and grabbing the victim
from her tormentors the stripping would have stopped
If some men had intervened and ordered it stopped, it would have stopped

I once saw a more dangerous situation where a thieve had been caught and was about to
be killed BUT one man stood up and said the thieve was not going to be killed and thats what happened

This #MyDressMyChoice type activism is rubbish it should be replaced
with a campaign that tells women (and men) exactly what to do if they witness a stripping
in progress i.e DONT JUST WATCH THEN GO SHOUTING ON SOCIAL MEDIA
DO SOMETHING (non-violent (scream)) RIGHT THERE AND THEN

next.....

Why strip her; why not cover her up with more clothes where they thought she was short. These are just criminals perverts looking to break the bore that is their life. When did matatu touts become paragon of virtues and morals.

Thats how Afghanistan turned into what it is today.
Used to be a country that respected women until a few men took control, then it became a free for all.

Guzmo:

Why do you assume that protest, in social media or wherever, necessarily precludes other actions?   A long-term solution to such problems, and the development of ways to deal with actions that arise from deeply-rooted Neanderthal mentalities, will take time and will require many different actions that cannot be accomplished in one or two weeks.  But the first step must be an expression of outrage; that is what is happening, and it is what will wake up many.

I agree....weren’t it for social media some of these atrocities may never have made headlines. The battle must be undertaken on all fronts. This kind of behavior is not acceptable. It’s as if these men were born from monkeys and not women. I assume some have mothers, sisters, daughters and aunties. If this was one of their family members would they react the same way?

Men love control. Stay away from those kind who always seek to dominate. One thing I have learned in life is that you always have to watch your back. Those in power always want more and are willing to take it away from you. So watch out!!!

Mya88, I agree with and duly condemn such babaric acts of stripping women. But also women need to understand that there are limits to everything on earth.  Public nudity is illegal and should remain as such.  Obscenity isn't different from pornography and should be punishable by law.

BT, you are preaching to the choir. What exactly is public nudity….were these women walking around with no clothes on? If they didn’t have any clothes’ then there wouldn’t be any reason to strip them naked, would there? Such acts of gross violation of innocent citizens going about their business should be condemned completely and those perpetrating such acts should face the full wrath of the law. This behavior isn’t normal of any society…don’t you see how far we have sunk as a people, that this happens in broad daylight and instead of helping people go on their business?

This could have been your sister, or kid…I am assuming you have no say in whatever they wear on any given day…….. There are other important things, simple things killing Kenyans unnecessarily…lets not also kill ourselves.

I have no problem with men who love control as long as their need for control is directed at useful ventures. This isnt a form of control, but a sickness of the mind. This highlights a society so deep in skunk I am not sure we can come out of it….That people are now policing others determining what is and isn’t appropriate to wear..in 2014…..only 50 years ago, the negro was walking naked somewhere in the bush…. Where is all the progress that we made?

All am saying is that  its evil to undress a woman  as its evil too to dress in skimpy dresses or whatever.
I love decently dressed women. I know you love attention but you don't have to expose your thighs in order to attract it.
If only we lived a life of righteousness and not of Laws, we would have no strippers and defenders of nudity.

I hear you BK. I see where you are coming from. I don’t condone women dressing provocatively in broad daylight as well…there is a time and place for everything. What you don’t like may be another man’s treasure, to each their own. I don’t wear min skirts, but I remember wearing them during my clubbing days, only at night and to the club. Apparently, that is the norm in those joints and I don’t even regret it. However you would have never caught me in broad daylight wearing such.

I notice you use the term evil very loosely. While I wouldn’t necessarily call it evil, I think it’s inappropriate. The world isn’t really as black and white as you may want it to be. There are a whole lot of gray shades in between. The devil and evil only exist in the realm of Christianity. We make a mistake by thinking that everyone see’s thinks they way we see them. Try telling a skimpy clad woman that its evil to dress that way and see how far you get. On the other hand if you tell them that its morally wrong and not conduct of a respectable individual…you may get somewhere. That is a universal language that everyone understands. These people stripping women are not performing Gods work…matter of fact God condemns such acts of violence

The Negro is an amazing creation.  Bazungu came and found people practically naked in a climate that permits it. You just need to look through the first pictures bazungu took of Africans.  Bazungu put clothes on them.

The Negro can now put on a suit and look dapper.  And he will strip clothes off a woman because they are too skimpy.
