Michael Joseph wishy wishy despite admitting opportunity to offer more financial products under CBK regulation - mortgages, asset financing.

Or force Safaricom to open Mpesa to other competitors. Having a monoploy in free market system is not the way to go and always remember the majority of Safaricom is not owned by Kenyans.

For those blinded  by 'economic' accolades dished out to Kibaki over the years, stop and take note of that subtle but important note posted by @KaInsect: ....

Former Nyeri MP Wanyiri Kihoro, said, though Kibaki, as a person, was a peace loving Kenyan, as a President, he performed dismally in uniting the country and would have performed better as a church minister than a president.

His achievements, he said, should not be exaggerated as he had his own shortcomings.

For instance, he faults Kibaki’s government for having some Safaricom shares sold to foreigners instead of letting Kenyans own it exclusively.

Wanyiri said Kenyans would be benefitting a lot from the bonuses of the biggest telecommunication company in the country.

The benefits of Safaricom to Kenyans are immense and cannot be equated to dividends only.

Safaricom  added Sh654 billion to the Kenyan economy in the year ended March 2020, consolidating its position as one of the single-largest contributors to the country’s GDP.

The input —an equivalent of six percent of Kenya’s GDP— means that Safaricom’s value creation to the Kenyan economy increased by nine percent or Sh54 billion from Sh601 billion the previous year.

The economic contribution was in the form of jobs, value chain opportunities for other businesses, taxes and dividends to shareholders.

“Safaricom has played an important role in Kenyan society for the last 20 years and I am eager to see that role expand as we continue to identify and exploit new opportunities in critical areas like agriculture, health and education,” said Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa.

Safaricom in its annual sustainability report said its operations sustained 1,013,728 direct and indirect jobs, up from 978,633 the previous year -- bucking the trend in corporate Kenya that was awash with layoffs and employment freezes.

Some 192,747 jobs are directly related to the company, while the rest are derived from indirect activities such as suppliers and users of the company’s various products.

This is the essence of efficient deployment of FDI.

I think you are mistaking Safaricom, the monopoly with Safaricom mobile money transfer service. The same service can be done using other competitors like Airtel and Telkom. Mpesa is now nothing new and has been repeatd allover the world without having one company domination almost all the market.

The benefits of Safaricom to Kenyans are immense and cannot be equated to dividends only.
