Title: Njonjo inquiry
Post by: KenyanPlato on January 08, 2022, 04:30:24 AM
I always assumed that  Njonjo commission of inquiry was over his connections to 1982 coup. I didn't realize it was over a coup in Seychelles. This is interesting story here put the record straight

Now I have to try to find if Njonjo was involved in 1982 coup or it was all rumors based on his Seychelles involvement

when did Raila say that? I thought Raila said to have heard rumours and on the eve of the coup he was informed of it. The army was reaching out to the political class to have a feel of how they would react.

My friend jaramogi was funding the coup and Raila was actively involved.Jaramogi was put in house arrest and Raila in kamiti..he is lucky to be alive.Njonjo was similarly found guilty of treason but Moi also forgave him

Jaramogi was also engine behind aborted 1971 coup with Ndolo the KDF chief of that time.. Kenyatta's crushed it, put jaramogi &others including my neighbor who was Kenya ambassador to china under house arrest and Ndolo was fired - Mulinge put in charge.

Remember 60-90s was cold war era - with USSR and US competing in funding coups and wars. After USSR death in 1989 - coups in Africa ended because the US had won - and has been dictating stuff in poor countries - and unilaterally launching wars or coups if you are stupid enough to challenge their wisdom of democracy and progress.

The mutiny in Nakuru was not odinga led. It was just soldiers who matinee. Jaramillo explains this in his book not yet uhuru. The arms found in his harambee house office weer destined for Uganda. Kenyatta didn't inform jaramogi until after the mutiny had been quashed.

How was he funding the coup. There was no link to the Odinga. Moi after the coup used this to deal with all the dissidents. The coup was planned and executed by the airforce.

The book entitled: Raila Odinga, an Enigma in Kenya Politics, by Dr Babafemi Badejo, says the coup plotters sought and got the blessings of Jaramogi and that Mr Odinga set up a communication centre at an apartment on Ngong Road from where he and the plotters monitored events.. Like i said the coup plotters were reaching out to the political class. On the eve of coup it was an open secret that the coup was underway among the elites. There is no direct link to Jaramogi or Raila.

Mutiny was in 1966..by mostly kalenjin n kamba soldiers complaining about welfare.. happened in lanet..crusjrd by British officers ...and as aftermath gsu was formed by Kenyatta's and heavily staffed by Kikuyu.Aborted coup by Ndolo and jaramogi in 1971.Unsuccesfully 6 hours coup by jaramogi, raila, ochuka and Luo junior air force officers that concided with njonjo one.Njonjo also killed Tom mboya.Moi knew of the coup but delayed dealing with it..kariuki the airforce commndaer was most likely working with njonjo

Where was the govt proof? They detained raila because they couldn't prove their case if any in court. It was a way of moi to hit at luo dissidents not for participating in coup but for politically opposing him..he wanted to isolate luos further. He targeted most of luo elites sympathetic to jaramogi

https://www.kenyans.co.ke/news/40638-11-charges-raila-was-slapped-after-1992-failed-coup

In his book Flame of Freedom, Raila penned out the 11 charges he was slapped with in court.

The first charge was that, in mid-July 1982, at Nairobi, Raila loaned Senior Private Hezekiah Ochuka his Peugeot 504, registration number KVZ 642, to assist him in making preparations to overthrow the government.

The second charge was that on or about the 18th day of July 1982, he visited the house of Senior Private Hezekiah Ochuka at Umoja Estate in Nairobi and discussed plans to overthrow the government with the Kenya Airforce Sergeant and others.

He was also accused that on or about the 30th day of July 1982, Raila went to Little Eden Bar at Umoja Estate in Nairobi and discussed with Senior Private Hezekiah Ochuka and other servicemen from the Kenya Air Force plans to overthrow the government.

The fourth charge was that he and Otieno Mak’Onyango (former Alego Usonga MP), on the 31st day of July of 1982, went to Mausoleum Bar in Buru Buru Estate in Nairobi, to discuss plans to overthrow the government with Ochuka and other servicemen from the Kenya Air Force.

Raila was further accused that together with Mak’Onyango, on the 31st day of July 1982, went to Ongere Bar and Shaurimoyo in Nairobi for the purposes of liaising with Ochuka and other servicemen from the Kenya Air Force prior to commencing the plan to overthrow the government later that night.

The sixth charge was that the ODM leader and the MP, on the night of the 31st July and 1st August 1982, occupied the house of Alfred Vincent Otieno at Ngong Road in Nairobi and assisted Ochuka and other servicemen to use the house as a centre of operation in their plans to overthrow the government.

The Opposition leader was also accused that on the same night, together with one Opwapo, brought a lamp and two accumulator batteries to the house of Alfred Vincent Otieno at Ngong Road in Nairobi for use in the course of establishing a rebel command centre.

The eight charge was that between the 31st July and 1st of August 1982, he loaned his Peugeot 504 registration KVZ 642 to Ochuka and Sergeant Joseph Ogidi Obuon in order to enable them to bring an SSE Land Rover for use in the course of establishing a rebel command centre.

On 1st August 1982, it was alleged that he loaned Peugeot 305 which belonged to a friend of his family to Senior Private Ochuka and others for purposes connected with the attempted overthrow of the government.

He was further accused that on or about the 9th day of August 1982, the ODM chief visited the house of Otieno at Ngong Road in Nairobi and removed a table which had earlier been used by the rebels in the course of attempting to establish the house as a command centre.

Between the 1st day of August 1982, and the 11th day of August 1982, it was alleged he assisted in the removal of two accumulator batteries knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that they had been used in connection with the attempted overthrow of the government.

Soon afterward, Raila together with Alfred Otieno and Mak’Onyango were committed to trial by chief magistrate Rauf, who ruled that there were sufficient grounds.

Charges..most of 1982 coup charges were never proven in court of law. When you torture witness to get evidence you bound to get nothing with credibility. Per raila he was no where near the coup.
