People need to plant this superfood in large number. It could lift many out of poverty
Areas that it can grow..
Counties in central Kenya, Eastern, Central rift valley, Lower Nyanza and all western Kenya counties have the best climatic conditions
for hass-Avocado cultivation. In Eastern Kenya, avocadoes do well in certain pockets such as Kang’undo, Mua Hills, Kathiani (Iveti hills), parts of Mbooni, all in Machakos County, and the high potential areas of the larger Embu and Meru counties.

Muranga will be richer than real estate counties

Iria's legacy will be avocados. Muranga is worth emulating

Uasin Gishu starting to dump maize for avacados

In a couple of years there'll be overproduction unless the entire world start eating guacamole salads and toast. Already big producers like costa group revenue are falling due to depressed avocado prices. Ideally Kenya should also be encouraging more domestic consumption. All the big producers have significant domestic market which helps hedge against global markets.
-
I think it will be sometime - avacado consumption is rising worldwide - as it superfood. The only problem it's a water hog. So likely California and parts of Mexico will give up production and leave it to Africa and such countries. There is huge scope - as globalization spreads the eating of avacados and such food.
Generally horticulture - both fruits and vegies - is the future of kenya farming - together with dairy, polutry, pig and such kind of intensive farming - we have extra labour.

Exporting food via planes (airmiles) and depleting your soil fertility to feed distant markets in search of foreign exchange is misguided.
The whole enterprise is a folly.
-
With foreign exchange - we can buy cereals like maize/rice/wheat from temperate countries - that can grow them in few months of summer in large land holdings and cheaply.
Our global advantage is not the land (we are mostly semi-arid) - but the SUN throughout the year - basically ability to supply food in winters and cold season to entire temperate world.
During the months when everything is frozen in the rich north - we should export trophical fruits, vegies and such - earn the dollar to import back their cheap cereals and useless sugarcane.

We should not be eating cereals that don't grow in our ecoregion. We should consume foods our ancestors ate.
Eat local, grow local, don't import food.

It's illusion that Kenyans were doing better in old days..life expectancy was 35yrs..

They'd have to compete with Mexico(which literally bleeds them) a stone throw away. I'd say Europe might be a more viable market.

Actually California with it's water scarcity cannot afford avacados farming..avacados is a water hog..it can only do well in tea growing zones like parts of Kenya or congo.Mexico has reached its limit but California will have to give up...no more water.avacado need lots of water and we'll drained soil..so tea growing areas or irrigated land that is not clay..most irrigated land is lowlands that clay deposits.. avacados cannot survive in water clogged soil..so basically it requires almost specific areas like tea or coffee...we'll drained soil and lots of rainfall.Kenya or Ethiopian highlands are ideally..Uganda will be tough...that rice area... water clogged swamps

It's illusion that Kenyans were doing better in old days..life expectancy was 35yrs..
They were not dying of simple communicable diseases and tribal warfare not lifestyle diseases brought on by diet. Their diets were good. 35 years that is mzungu fake news I know my ancestors leaved well into their 70's and 80's.

Most western Kenya is ideal for avacados. Not useless sugarcane that sucks all soil nutrients and pay a pittance.

Leave 35yrs - most kids could not even survive to their 1st birthday. That is why Africa population remain low. Embrace modernity. Stop thinking that our ancestors had it great. The last century has been great for human kind..population has shot from I bet less than a billion to 7 Billion people. Thanks to modern agriculture driven by artificial fertilizers, medicine and all the things you love to hate.
We cannot run away from modern globalized world into organic local nostalgic past - it a pure lie- that life was better in the past - it get better everyday.

There are many so called superfoods , hell even regular sukama wiki is a superfood. While anything to improve incomes is welcome, its nice to taper down the forecast. Production acreage is increasing in Caribbean, latin america and Asia, the supply will soon outstrip demand, depressing prices further. Apart from increasing production we should create our own Kenyan brand, expand domestic market and if possible create a big Avocado virgin oil market. Prices of Fresh commodities with short shelf life are notoriously volatile one of the reason why there are no futures contract on exchanges.

It will probably be 10-20yrs before Avacado market will become saturated. The Californias and those using irrigation will abandoned it. For now we need to concentrate on this. I think kenyans general eat a lot of avacado. Even before exports - avacado consumption locally was high - I think we produce 300k - and export only 80k metric tonnes. Personally I grew up eating a lot of avacados from our own orchard. Nearly everyone had one avacado tree in our village. It requires zero maintenance and like tea it doesnt get sick.
Anything for me is better than wasting land in maize, wheat and sugarcane. Entire western kenya, parts of rift valley and Gusii nyanza represent wasted agriculture potential.
The fact that we can export - mean in terms of value chain - it almost like manufacturing - it has huge multiplier effect - than our useless maize.
One avacado farmer can employ one packer - one truck - to mombasa or airport - then ship - and all related brokers - then forex. That is huge value chain.

Anything is better than sugar and maize farming. In parts of Muranga and Thika there are serious pack centres sustaining local economies.

Yes, my brother-in-law just left his banking job, to cocentrate on exporting passion.

I actually believe Kenya can be a fruits powerhouse. Coast, Ukambani, Baringo, Westpokot, Elgeyo Marakwet can be major fruits producers.
