Several months ago, I gatecrashed a lunch session attended by two not-so-junior Jubilee insiders.

It was around the time then Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu hosted a Tangatanga meeting attended by youths clad in yellow, rather than the Jubilee red, an action that seemed a throwback to the days when Deputy President William Ruto led the URP.

Being a heavy-duty consumer of history and political intrigue and since everybody at the lunch table was washing down the meal with copious amounts of politics, I took the chance to ask the two Jubilee insiders, “Just how did we get here?
How did it become okay for people in the President’s own party to disobey him so openly, then actually go on to antagonise him in his own county? Why are so many elected officials from the Mt Kenya region openly casting their lot with the DP rather than the President?”

The two insiders opted to start from the beginning.

Apparently, in the early life of their coalition, the differences in political approach between President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP Ruto became clear.

Uhuru, quintessentially from the Kibaki mould, wasn’t enthusiastic about the 'receiving goodwill delegations' style of politics or' greeting the members' -euphemism for dishing out handouts to supporters.

“Have you ever seen the boss (Uhuru) receiving goodwill delegations in Gatundu or at his home in Nairobi?” Of course, I hadn’t.

“Like Kibaki, he is not made for that kind of politics. But Ruto is a graduate of the Moi School and the Raila University of politics. He goes right to the people, meets them at his home, remembers people from the remotest parts of the country by their names, and is not averse to popping up at your rural home unannounced for lunch!”

It turns out that when Jubilee was conducting its primaries in 2017, Ruto practically controlled every structure of the party, and most of those elected through Jubilee in the 2017 General Election felt they owed allegiance to him.

It wasn’t until poll losers in Central Kenya raised an alarm over how the Jubilee nominations had been conducted that the President apparently first realised there was a problem in the party.

By then, the party’s elected folks and large parts of its grassroots were already loyal to Ruto and his 2022 agenda, even as the President tried to restore focus on his own term and legacy.

Fast forward to last week during the funeral service of former Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama. If it had been intended as a “funeral with a difference”, devoid of all the Tangatanga noise and indignity, and it was going quite well, up to a certain point.

Indeed, one speaker even thanked Interior CS Fred Matiang’i for ensuring Nyagarama’s service was full of class and dignity, euphemisms for 'keeping away Tangatanga from the burial'. That was until someone invited MPs to “say just your name and one word!”

I don’t know why masters of ceremonies still waste time asking Kenyan politicians to say “just your name and one word”, knowing very well politicians think they would die if they did that!

Anyway, as sure as day follows night, you were never going to bet against South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro delivering greetings from DP Ruto. And as soon as he did, cheers broke out in the audience.

?s=12 Uhuru is just doing his job, Ruto is all about campaigning and public relations. There are things happening right now that Uhuru could be singing from rooftops but he is too humble. I will do it for him, the ongoing revitalization of Nairobi, the floating foot bridge in Mombasa, The very popular Nanyuki railway connection, Kenya meat commission is back in full swing and pastoralists and other stakeholders are happy, the railway to kisumu will be back in March, the Kisumu port etc despite COVID-19 which has decimated economies all over the world, the guy is crafting some kind of a legacy. If for Ruto is not about tribes like they are now claiming after Uhuru statement, why are Rift Valley Kikuyus threatened with genocide if they do not vote a certain way?

Uhuru is not lazy or a drunkard, he is so comfortable with himself that he is not afraid to admit that he takes a beer like 90% of man all over the world after a hard day of work. Ruto has this fake well controlled image, he is in church every Sunday but during the week, he is robbing Kenyans, cheating on his wife and there are rumors of him battering his wife. I do not think that he is even comfortable with the way he looks, remember the time he always wore that Kanu hat? He is as fake as they come. He claims credit for everything but he has had to hang onto Moi, Raila or Uhuru coattails to come close to achieving anything, without tribal politics, running on legacy and ideology, Raila will beat Ruto like a drum. Uhuru made that statement very cleverly, he knew what he was saying, let us run on issues and not tribes, Ruto has nothing there. Even you pundit have to now come here and tell us about Ruto’s agenda and not tribal numbers, another master stroke from Uhuru. Ruto is a has been, bathed in old Kanu type vision less, handout politics.

Jubilee 2 is doing real development despite makelele and firimbi crew lead by Ruto. This Raila effect we saw in early NARC as they launched bypasses all over. Bypasses and now lite-rail are very optimal choices compared to super-costly SGR and last-miles. If Jubilee 1 had avoided last-mile nonsense and focused on cheaper power for actual manufacturers- another Big 1 might be on point. Leadership is strategy or thinking - not hyperactivity or omnipresence.

This DESPITE covid. As covid die off hustler might have no misery and gloom to sell. Pundit i know Dr Doom is your man :) but you need to handle him with 19ft pole - gloomster syndrome is vicious than covid.

Pundit imagine Raila doing this without any 50-50 and with covid. Just like early NARC and NARA - best growth days in Kenya with dazzling CHEAP infra expansion.

However Ruto has merits too - he is better propagandist and more eloquent - he is proving to be an excellent kiongozi ya upinzani.

Jubilee 1.0 had clear manifesto - and they executed it - and got rewarded with a second term. I think what basically didn't get executed was Stadias. Otherwise sgr, paved roads, electricity, water, laptops, name it - they delivered.

Uhuru then dumped that manifesto - and instead created his own - Big 4 agenda - with targets - and later BBI.

None of his Big 4 agenda is even remotely on progress - it's an epic failure. BBI will also be an epic failure.

Uhuru is just  a joking mlevi who cannot execute anything - even huduma number :)

Big 4 - Housing - the target was 0.5M housing units. So far delivered 500 units. CYTON created around the same time has delivered more than that. Epic failure.
Manufacturing - he didn't even try.
Agricluture - the same

He is no longer even talking about Big 4.

He has no legacy - no leadership - and COVID-19 - has totally exposed him.

Uhuru right now is so unpopular - he'd lose even in Gatundu. If he dares the referendum on BBI - it will become a referendum on his 2nd term.

You live in alternate universe.
My friend this 2nd term is a disaster.
Under Jubilee 1.0 - the economy grew by 6% for five years (best ever)
Under NARA - Kibaki eventually sunk it to 1.7%.
We are now in a recession - world bank says we will grew by -1% in 2020. Kenya gov are claiming 0.6% growth.
This year we are likely to continue with mess. Next year will be election
Long before covid - economy was already tanking.
And the more Uhuru interferes with his succession - the more the economy tanks -

So we can conclude second term average growth will be worse than Moi.

If you check the debt in Jubilee 1.0 and Jubilee 2.0 - you'll be shocked. SGR was good investment. Jubilee 2.0 in 3 yrs has borrowed more with absolutely nothing to show for it.

This is why Jubilee is now a bad name like KANU and Ruto has decided to dissociate himself from Jubilee and this gov. It's an epic failure.

?s=21...Look at Ruto’s candidate in Nairobi!!! Is there any Kenyan out there who is comfortable going back to this retrogressive culture?
