Veritas Thanks But No
« on: September 02, 2014, 05:41:15 PM »
As everybody around knows, I am a very abrasive fella. Being a moderator will tame me. I want to be free to tackle any topic. Why even attacking moderators is good sport.

So please, I had not noticed it could you pass over my name and hand it to some other guy. As long as it is NOT Njamlik. I think you should avoid controversial figures like Omollo, Pundit, Njamlik etc.

In fact you don't need moderators.

Agreed! No moderators. It will turn this place too political in an unpleasant way. Self-moderation is the key. With a report button for when people post porn or other stuff that may get the site banned.

Omollo, I've known you for many years. Read your stuff for many years. I trust your judgement and know you respect other opinions without resorting to deleting or changing their posts.

We need influential moderators, experienced bloggers to steer debate etc. they should be bloggers who are respected and be able to mentor other members in the area they are passionate about.

This forum is not a dictatorship. I want the best of the Kenyan Diaspora minds to feel respected and free to engage in healthy discourse. A permanent cyber home for all of us.

It would be an absolute honour if you can moderate this section. Please have a think about it.

veritas,

I'd go with self-moderated forums for the forums that mirror the old nipate.   And then you can create new forums on request, that can be moderated.  So you can have business, technology, religion kind of forums that can be moderated.

Kababe, I guess the problem with RCB - random moderators were voted in. The problem with Nipate.com is there's one moderator - Admin, and subsequently the site is riddled with problems and any time now or in the future it'll get shut down. I don't want this forum to be like that.

I guess to reassure everyone, the moderators can only delete whole posts (be it spam, porn etc) and not edit posts. Having experienced moderators means unlikely they'll get offended over posts enough to warrant a delete. The moderators running each section, I have known for years. They have upheld self-moderation policies on Nipate.com and I know I can trust them.

Ok. But I think you should be careful with how much power the mods exercise....Can they read pms or private profile info for example?

Welcome aboard Termy!  ;D

You and I have been down this moderator road each time it happens in how many forums. You organised the RCB moderator elections to its dismal fail. On the otherhand, I don't want what's happening on Nipate right now (riddled with spam, one moderator - Admin) happen here. I've known you guys for years and trust your judgement in upholding self-moderation. I can't run this site on my own. I need moderators to uphold self-moderation for the health and longevity of this site.

Hey Veri. I'm with the majority, self moderation is key and then we can create specific niches with a moderator. I haven't yet explored what I can or can't do as a mod but we should avoid situations like in RCB where moderators could view private pms and IP addresses. As soon as the site gets going I'll revert to ordinary membership status...if you don't mind.

veritas,

I am certainly very neutral in such matters.  I'll remain in place until we attain stability and figure out what is ultimately best approach.  In the meantime I will limit moderation to spam(or spam like things).  The last thing you want is an RCB like situation where mods are perceived as partisan and discussions are dominated by them.

The moderators can only delete posts, not edit. They can not read your private messages and anything else. I have turned off the moderator audit trail so not even I can see your private messages and actions. Moderators can't see your IP. I stalled an extra security patch to ensure all IPs are concealed and protected from everyone. It is however still logged backdoor to stop spam IPs. But if anyone hacks that I will get a call from my cyber security team in real life.

Yay!!! Phew. That's what I was most worried about. I have heard some horror stories on nipate about stuff that went down in RCB, some peoples photos were published!!! :-\

I agree that posts should be deleted for spamming or placing the board in danger of banning, like porn, violent pictures etc. No need to delete posts for other reasons, I think.

That's right.  I can't see anything apart from the button that allows me to delete someone else's post.  The mod function is certainly more restricted than the PHPBB equivalent.  There is really nothing on users in the admin function...not even a list.

Since that is something nobody will believe, I suggest you take an approach with rolling moderators for sometime.  You make a certain group moderators for a short while.  And then repeat until everyone gets a taster.  They will agree it's a relatively powerless and probably thankless function.

After that you can leave it to trusted hands.

Termy, thank you for letting everyone know that. The selected moderators should be moderators, honestly. I've known you guys for a decade or so and can trust you not to delete posts due to personal offences. We bear the scars of different forums and the experience of what works and what hasn't. We have a history on being truthful about these things and I hope members will respect that.

Haha my people kweli, I see folk will never forget rcb moderation.  I am quite surprised that during my time as a mod on rcb I never once came across the facility to read user PMs etc.  Did I miss a trick?  The one thing I remember seeing were the users' private email addresses.

My vice, I made sport of banning offensive /inappropriate words and theirmany  clever permutations.   8)

Having  only Raila, ODM, CORD cheerleeders as moderators will not do this forum any good. Self moderation is the way. Anybody who violates the rules stipulated on registration ( ie vulgar language , hate speech , porn , spam should be reported to admin and  disbard for a period of time.

Let this not be a CORDist  forum.

Agreed, Jakoyo.

I nominate  Joste and Energizer in addition for the sake of balance. Appearance is as important as reality in some things.

Hello Jackie; you are here... ::) ::)

I think moderation should only be necessary for Spam and Porn. Anything else is fair game. The source of spam is mainly Bots. but once in a while, you'll come across a deranged moron that will want to spam the forum.
