Certain birds and mammals, chimpanzees among them, in fact use tools.  I am always puzzled when a big deal is made of tool use by animals(including people).  When they refer to people or their ancestors as ape-like, one can be forgiven for thinking that people are not apes.  If chimps, whose closest relatives are humans and not other apes, are apes, then so are people.
