On contrary bandits do very very SERIOUS RECCE or intelligence gathering before any attack. They are people whose only job is to gather intelligence - they are NIS of raiders - and planners - who is normally a Laibon and leader(s) of the raiding party.

Police need to understand how Kalenjin conduct raids.

A leader of group of raiders approaches a Laibon or Orkoiyot.
He can go with specific plan to raid specific area or ask Laibon for areas to raid.
Laibon charges consultation fees of say a sheep - and then start planning or if he has plans - then sell to the leader.
The raiding is planned for a month - they sent gifted scouts and intelligence gatherers - to find out where cattle are - where they are kept - where they
graze - how many people guard them - what weapon they have - where they drink water - where people sleep - they stay until they get a pattern - so maybe 2 weeks until they are sure they have predictable pattern on how things are done.
Initially the earlier scouts - just hide in trees or forest near the target - and spend a few days observing.
They report back to the Laibon - now very senior intelligence are sent to confirm. final plans - a few days
Then leader of the raid is given a plan - how many men he will need - how to get out - where to station them - others are standard - things like cows being driven in circles until the foots are lost - stationing sharp shooters where police or the enemy will follow the cows.
Once the plan is ready & specific - attack at this specific time on specific location with this kind of men - the Laibon give the final blessing -  - and raiding starts - it could be as few as 10 people or as many as entire location - 1,000 people plus.
The raid because of extensive intelligence gathered is almost always a success.
The cows are driven back to village to great celebration - the Laibon as chief planner - picks the best - and rest are shared.
Many get 1 or 2 cows depending on how big the raid.

For food warriors, scouts and name them train themselves to survive on honey and dried meat for weeks.
They dont carry a lot of things because lots of running is involved.
