Title: Kadudu - Europe or Africa
Post by: RV Pundit on November 12, 2019, 12:57:42 PM
If you had to choose btw Kigali for a net of 4k dollars and Geneva for net of 8k dollars per month - with nearly same benefits - where would you go? From the little research - it appears Geneva is so damn expensive - I would have to live in France :) (without speaking French) - somewhere sijui Fernie Voltair.

Kigali beats Geneva hands down. Switzerland especially Geneva and Zurich are the most expensive places I have ever been too. A hot choclate in a cafe costs 13€. That is over 1500 Ksh. I have no idea about the rents, but must be astronomical.
My choice would be Kigali any time. The Swiss are also very conservertive folk. The place is clean like in heaven, but also boring as the people lack some sense of humour. Work ethic and obeying rules stand above anything else. Even to German standards Switzerland is a very orderly country.

No need to ask around, As an African the choice should be obvious !!!

Geneva is European and Kigali is African

Anything European is better than anything African

There you have it

Switzerland is ridiculously expensive! The only affordable places in Western Europe are: Germany, France, and Belgium. The Netherlands is a bit more expensive than these three but still reasonable. Luxembourg, Switzerland, and the North (The Nordic countries) are crazy expensive. Rent especially. In Switzerland, even eating at home, aka shoping at the supermarket, is too damn expensive. There's nothing cheap in that country! Health insurance/Healthcare, rent, food, transport, entertainment: it's all too expensive!

What if I live in France. They told me I can find a house in say Freney Voltaire - which is just 10km from Geneva. I probably will be living illegally there - because I am not EU citizen - and my residence permit will be for Switzerland?

There are no border controls thanks to Schengen Agreement.

Even for Swiss who are not in EU.

Switzerland is not in the EU but is a signee of Schengen Agreement. The same case with Norway. Only the UK and Ireland are in the EU and not signed to Schengen.

Even for Swiss who are not in EU.

If I were you, I wouldn't risk it. You are allowed to live in France 3 months out of every 6, based on the Schengen agreement, but still. As a long-stay resident, you must register your address of resident at your local commune/town, and if you move, you must inform them and register your new commune within a few days. The government knows where you live at all times. This applies to everyone, even EU citizens. So you'll have to register a Swiss address either way. Even if you find a Kenyan buddy who allows you to register their place, it's complicated.

People are different. If you ask me, go to Kigali to live and visit Europe on holiday. There's good healthcare and schooling and you can spend very little if you manage that arrangement (of living in France), but it's also risky (if you get caught).

But the alternative is to apply for a resident permit (to judst live but not work) in France: look into it. A regular one or the EU Blue card. With a salary of 8,000 Euro you prolly qualify for the EU Blue Card: it's for high skilled workers who earn at least 1.5 times the average salary and allows you to move, live, and work freely in the EU.

There are no border controls thanks to Schengen Agreement.

Kadudu, I crossed into Switzerland from France by train and my passport and bag were checked; Why? Because there are items the Swiss are not permitted to purchase in France: certain quantities of meat and wine. They must do that or no one near the border will buy anything in Swiss stores. That was Basel. Maybe it's different in other border cities.

Problem is the Euro lost ground to the Swiss Franc some time back. Since then it is really worth it for the Swiss to travel to the EU for shopping. Personally I have never been checked and so no one at the border  around Basel. I was in a car. Not sure about trains. Also the Swiss do not want refugees craossing over from the EU to their vacuum cleaned country.

Wow that was quick. What is your motive of relocating if we may ask? Good luck and all the best.

I would do Geneva and ask for double.  Kigali deal might be better on paper if you consider cost of living.  But Geneva offers a first world environment, schools, healthcare - living standards in general.  Kigali is run by a tyrant with a penchant for getting into tiffs with neighbors and you never know when shit will hit the fan.

My current job will require me to move to Kigali - Bazungu having problems in Kenya due to work permit - so our dept has been moved to Kigali. Now I have another job offer in Geneva.

Not a chance they will double it immediately - but after six months they will review - but I don't imagine a big jump. Maybe if my wife finds something to do - even if it's waiting tables - or I don't know what - possible without speaking French. Anyway I think it's about time my balls got some freezing experience.

Why are Bazungu having problems with work permits and the Chinese now even bringing in househelps and drivers from China? First information from teachers in international schools in Kenya which are now flooded by Chinese students.

Chinese come to work for Gov or it's parastals as public sector contractors - they get carte blanche work permits. Most Wazungu work for Ngos and private sector - those have serious restrictions.

Ok, you picked Geneva. All the best. I'd still urge you to try and get an official residence permit from France once you get to Geneva, rather than live in France more than 3 months 'illegally'. Your salary might qualify you for an EU Blue Card or a regular residence French permit. The latter would be to live but not work in France which would be ok. The EU Blue card, if you can get it, would give you and your family the maximum freedom you can have to operate within the EU without being a citizen.
