TYCOON Chamanlal Kamani and his two sons were yesterday taken to court on charges of fraud arising out of the multibillion-shilling Anglo Leasing scandal.

Chamanlal and his sons Rashmi and Deepak been linked to the scandal for many years, but appeared in court only yesterday and denied the charges.

The three are accused of conspiring to defraud the government of tens of billions of shillings through suppliers financing agreements for computerisation of security, law and order systems for a Kenya Police project codenamed e-Cop.

The charge sheet indicates that on January 12, 2004, as owners of the Infotalent Ltd, they received Sh1.8 billion from government without delivery of services.

They faced another charge of receiving Sh3.6 billion on April 21, 2004, in the name of Infotalent Limited held with HSBC Republic Bank (Suisse) SA.

The three are further accused of defrauding the government of Sh4 billion.

On another charge, they are accused of obtaining Sh122 million.

Their lawyer, Ahmednasir Abdullahi, hinted that he might ask that the matter be referred to the High Court, because it arises out of a contract, hence should be heard by the court’s Commercial Division.

The DPP noted that the offence the three face is fraud and it remains as such whether it arises out of a contractual or land issue.

The lawyer also pleaded with the court to allow Rashmi and his father Chamanlal to retain their passports.

Ahmednasir said Rashmi resides in Dubai and would need his passport to travel to his country of residence.

Chamanlal will need to travel to India for treatment every now and then.

The plea was opposed by the DPP, who said there is no extradition treaty between Dubai and Kenya.

Magistrate Hannah Ndung’u ordered the Kamani's to deposit their passports in court within 14 days.
The case will be mentioned on March 18.

You want a Mumbi to throw them in and their wealth declared illegal proceeds and confiscated.

But will Tobiko do his job or just screw up after getting a cut.

Pundit

These guys were once powerful. They are shadows of themselves. Apart from two, I think all the rest are living from hand to mouth - (Not the Kamani's of course but the African lot)

If one were to pursue the Truth, these guys would have to die. They have so much dirt on politicians that a proper hearing would endanger the country's well-being.

I looked at the so called accused lined up in court. I have known all but one in one way or another. I couldn't help noticing how low Dave Mwangi had fallen. Mwangi was in my cross hairs over the destruction of the Water Catchment area between Western and Nyanza Provinces - then I was working for an environmental protection org. He was full of madharau and stole openly.
