It was at a function there that I first heard the elegant sounds of this instrument. Then there was this other long instrument - like a zither - that sits on a stand or planks and has many strings, but whose name I can't quite recall that was also very interesting.

Guilin is a scenic and beautiful city with clean, natural unpolluted rivers and lakes, and perhaps the only place in China without air pollution.

Among the African musicians who made a huge impression on me when I was a lad: one Miriam Makeba. Beyond her music was her staunch commitment to civil rights, something for which she paid a huge price.

I found it interesting that a lot of this stuff appears on YouTube, which, like many colourful (?) sites, is "strictly banned, forbidden", and blocked in China ... unless one uses a VPN to do some "unblocking", which activity is also strictly banned and forbidden.

There you go. The paranoid CCP/CPC have tried to stifle free movement of information but the younger generation are always one step ahead of their censorship. Though Facebook and Twitter are also blocked, it's amazing that all my relatives and friends have accounts!

A good start point would be Russia. The Western part of Russia, particularly St.Petersburg, is Europen, and has some of the most fascinating museums and architecture in the entire world. I would pick as my first spot the Maarinsky Theater, which houses the great Maarinsky Ballet and the Orchestra. Next would be the Hermitage Museums; they have the old and the new buildings. Be prepared to see the most amazing collection of paintings, sculptures and antiques -- and by the time you and your sis are done touring these two places, you'll both have run out of superlatives to describe what you saw there.
A digression... I find it odd that a country that produced the highly cultured Alexander III, Peter the Great, and Catherine the Great (ok, I know she was Prussian), also produced the thuggish and coarse Putin.
Onward to Prague, a beautiful city on a par with Paris in its architecture and museums. And the Czechs produce great beer.
Austria, the land of Mozart and many other classical musicians of note would be the next stop. If you have a chance go to Salzburg, where he was born and resided as a child and visit the Mozart Museum. If not you can opt for the Mozarthaus in Vienna.
La Scala in Milan comes highly recommended. Two of the greatest classical music conductors in history, Riccardo Muti and the lamented Claudio Abbado, plied their trade there, so why not pay homage to the great ones at their temples.
To Catalan. Check Barcelona and the surroundings in general, and if you still crave architecture, you'll find the works of Antoni Gaudi in the Modernist style intriguing. If you guys are foodie-types, you'll love the cuisine.
On to France. Paris is Paris with the usual, but if you like different... the Catacombs will be one for the memories. Next hop onto the train and head south to Aix-en Provence and the Luberon region, quaint and charming, and my favorite part of France. Food is religion down there.
If the Channel Tunnel folks aren't on strike, try that mode of transport, so that you can check it off your bucket list. Hopefully you don't restrict yourselves to England but add Scotland to your itinerary. In London, I never get enough of the impressive Victoria and Albert Museum, which houses the works of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Then head north to Scotland and Glasgow and absorb the works of the great Mackintosh and others at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. And, finally, don't forget to eat and finish your haggis.

In these days of D. Trump, perhaps Americans should be on the lookout for "secret Mexicans". Of such, my favourite is Linda Ronstadt. She was so famous for so long as a "proper American" doing "proper American music" that hardly anyone ever thought of her as Mexican. I have listened to quite a few recordings of her performances, but I only have two CDs of those---one a "followup" from the other---and I think they are way up there.
When, "late in life" (but quite a while ago), she returned to her roots, the results were amazing---a true artiste at perfect peak. Canciones De Mi Padre is an astounding recording. I never spruik anything on this thread, but I highly recommend the CD (and follow-up one). The following "live" piece is not the best representative, but have a taste.

Another of my old favourites ..... Hugh Masekela used to tell this story about his arrival in America. The wazungu were astonished that (a) he could speak, and (b) he could do it in English! They attributed all this to his rapid "Americanization" and swore that it had made a lasting impression. Apparently they thought that his pre-arrival linguistic skills were limited to saying "ooga booga!".
Masekela's "tribute" was in what I consider, even now, to be his best work ever: Lasting Impressions of Ooga Booga/ The Americanization of Ooga Booga, with album cover showing the nattily-dressed Mr. Ooga Booga---sharp suit and briefcase but barefoot ... in a tropical jungle.

Much like mumble rap in the US it's no longer about the music and lyrics but the dancing, repetition of senseless chants and the bass/beat peke yake. I must admit I like gqom a lot regardless. It has grown on me since Sho Madjozi threw some swa lyrics into her version of it humo humo. Destruction boyz stuff is super uptempo bwana. Some of us lost the energy to keep up with these ear splitting high tempo moves kitambo sana. The old heads (Malinga, Lvovo & Professor) just look out of place in some of these millenial videos these days. Let's hope their reinventions of themselves (eg with amapiano- which is not bad at all) will last long term but I highly doubt it. Once a whole genre goes it goes kabsa.
Found a remake of this old gem by Naima Kay. Now these are the tunes I can listen to all day. Reminds me of Summer 2013. Beach hopping and easy sun splashed days. Corona seems to have made those days seem like paradise compared to this new normal.

Asali (whatever happened to her?), Mil Polo, the swarm of RVs, Abbyngel, Veritas, Shisheido (Mayweather fan), Zokwe Nyani Kasolo Mkia, Cookie and so many more. As soon as folks started posting mzikis usiku on Friday you knew the weekend was on!

I remember going there around 2010 Dec only to find tusungus and local ngels dancing vigorously to a furious sweat with the ocean breeze cooling the open dancefloor. Visiting Kwiinya from US during dec hols was fun, man. Kila kitu seemed different and exotic. This song below reminds me of those likizos. South Coast is awesome, man.

Anything by Hugh Masekela reminds me of my college buddy from Namibia. Dude was jazz obsessed. I have never met a person with such a vast collection of jazz music than him. Back then I was slowly acquiring the taste for traditional jazz music so this album was a good fusion of jazz and r&b that helped the process.

Kirundi/Kinyarwanda has a very distinctive sound to it. I once had some two very close lady friends (and neighbours) in the US who just happened to be Hutu and Tutsi respectively who lived together. Was shocked that they spoke fluently to each other fweeeeeeeh with 99.99% mutual intelligibility That is when I realised tribalism in Burundi and Rwanda is just an artificial colonial construct.

These song, these song, these song I tells ya reminds me of the dance floor at Tamasha in Hurlingham with the supuu young chikindees getting down to its beat chwi chwi chwiiiiii. These songs remind me of that ganja smoking buddy of mine from SwapoLand in my undegrad years. He was reggae (and ganja) obsessed and always had a guitta nearby. One day we walked into a convenience store pamoja and we were locked in (automatic door) and the cops were called because with his huge jacket, scary looking dreads and weed smell, the cashier feared that he had a gun and we wanted to rob him (a tiny AA guy)! Thankfully when the AA heard the African accent and my buddy showed him he had no gun under his jacket..the AA relaxed and let us go.
He always talked about forming his own band some day. Have not seen him since around 1998.
So you can imagine my SHOCK when I found out he actually has a band that is causing quite a buzz in his country after renaming himself FAIRDREAD HAUKONGO :lolz:

The two guys next to him took off running after him at top speed. Right at Univeristy way is where they shikad him. You just see them removing their guns from within their suits. Kumbe the guys were special branch and they were arresting one of those underground opposition activists and taking him (I suppose) to either Kingsway House or Central Police Station to finya his vitals! Those were some crazy years man.

For some reason they always played extended house mixes (no vocals) for hours during SA summers (Dec) back then. Those were some good days. "My bird" tells me that this corona thing is here with us to stay meaning those simpler times will never happen again..at least in the next 5 years to come :D. Thanks for these ones, man

Me against the world hit the charts a mere months before I left Kenia for the USA, leaving flames in its wake. We had our whole lives ahead of us. Hard to describe that optimism and sense of excitement of youth.
Dear mama with its thumping bassline rocked speakers at Carni, JayKays and Visio bwaad. Then hunting for delicious Topaz kukus at 5 oclock in the morning!! Tupac was so real, man. He wasn't rapping, he was just delivering pure truth on wax no filter. That's why he was so loved man. No fakeness at all in everything he wrote.
And once I got to the land of opportunity, I will never forget the first time I heard Temptations BUMPING from a '95 Mazda MPV with crazy woofers back when folks used to cruise and show off on Canal St in the Big Easy during my school break after the first sem in school. I was blown away by the cars, the chicks, the seeming wealth of these young guys and gals which was quite awe inspiring for a nobody from Nairobi :roll: :roll:. The Big Easy is a crazy nice city man, unique in the whole wide world. Canal, Bourbon, The Garden District, Congo Square jazz nites, Jackson Square. ...strong coffee and beignets at Cafe Du Monde at the French market the next morning after we woke up after a night of partying? Let me just shut up man SMH. Those surely were the days!!

When this album was released in Spring 1996, nobody knew how huge it would get. It ruled the summer fuaaaaa with no real competitors and still bumps quite nicely to this day. it also spawned Lauryn Hill who went on to sell a gazillion records on her freshman album, before going looney after all the rituals and Satanic stuff she had to perform to maintain her fame and fortune. Just like Lark Voorhies. Isapite. Fame and fortune aint no joke, ma brodas and sistrens.
Oooh la la la (refugee camp remix) brings nice mems of my old hooptie that kulad serious miles on roadtrips with lady and jamaa friends to different towns and cities around where we went to colle. The funny thing is we were so tight as buddies back then, now we are scattered all over the globe and do not even keep in touch. I remember it like it was yesterday. Echoes of our laughter in the car, these joints bumping, even what the ladies were wearing and what we were drinking. At some point the driver was getting drunk so he stopped the car by the side of the road and asked me to take over since he didn't want to get caught on a DUI by the po po! life is something else. That last video brings back memories I had totally forgotten I had. I just noticed Tira was in it, literally an extra. He was a relative unknown when it came out. Prof and Oskido have definitely been around the block. Of course the bafazi are another problem yoh :D.

I was never a country fan growing up, mpaka I lived in the South briefly, na hapo it cannot be avoided. Country music grows on you like a crazy girlfriend with mingi drama but is super attractive so you just learn to deal.

Good one. When I was 19, I had a buddy from Swapo-land in his early 30s in my colle who used to make fun of me for only listening to hip hop tupu back then.
Dude had an incredible collection of hundreds of CDs of all sorts of genres. Jazz was probably 50% of it. He told me the difference between listening to what's hitting in hip hop and listening to classic stuff is that by the next year the hip hop hit is gone forever and forgotten while classics just need re-mastering for sound and can be listened to enjoyably 30 years down the line! Took me over a decade to finally understand what he meant. Timeless nostalgia tinged lyrics in this one.

Songs are crazy things. They can take you to long forgotten places. This one takes me back to a road trip I made with friends and the azanian chick I had a crush on back then to the Crescent City during my colle days. I can still remember the conversations, echoes of our laughter, the heated debates, the sunny summer breeze, everything. And the traffic jam into the Big Easy when we arrived there around 3pm on a weekday. I also remember us pub hopping on Bourbon that whole evening! Back then I was a drinker so I remember us getting wasted at some joint near Royale st. We didnt even stay the night. How we drove all the way back to the city we were living in back then is a blur.

1995 was a beautiful year. This jam still thumps as nicely as it did back then and brings back very pleasant long-forgotten memories of that year.
A year before he died on Sep 13th 1996 at age 25.
We youngsters used to look up to him but what does one really know at age 25? Little to nothing. When one listens to the lyrics sasa decades later, unaona tu haguna gitu anasema ya maana. But the beat and memories are nice.
