Title: Safaricom smart meters - with KPLC - game changer?
Post by: RV Pundit on September 16, 2021, 11:29:12 PM
The telco is planning to install a Sh31 billion intelligent system that will connect 330,300 electricity meters to a central location and track electricity use, power outages and load on transformers as well as read meters remotely.

This will help bring down the share of electricity bought from generators such as KenGen  that does not reach home and businesses, technically known as system losses, from 23.93 percent to eight percent, earning Kenya Power  additional revenues of Sh71 billion in eight years.

Safaricom is set to earn 75 percent of the additional sales or Sh53 billion, with Kenya Power taking the remaining Sh17.9 billion, according to the utility firm’s board papers.

The problem with these parastatals is that they do things 10yrs after you have been there and made a value proposition to them. Nothing new or novel about this... long gave them a proposal which they rejected. Only embracing this now because they are flat broke and can’t afford any spare cash to even bill their supply!!! And if you look at so-called current digital meters, they require you to go physically key in your 16digit token; which with a sim-card enabled slot from the get-go they simply should have been accepting a top-up immediately you buy the token!

Not you still needed to key it in..but I guess Safaricom will simply stick a sim card and mini controller into every of those meters. Should be easy to replace all meters - and have that smart meetering with smart monitoring.

In kenya systems are designed to fail because there is someone m a king money and capitalizing on system failure. Big question who has heavily invested on those generators, wind and solar? 99.9% kenyatta criminal enterprise.
