Safaricom has a monopoly. In most countries in the world, no one company unless state controled, does one mobile provider have such a monopoly. Best would be three mobile providers sharing the cake with non having more than 40% of the market share.
It may seem attractive to have a company with a big turnover, but a monopoly leads to less competiotion, less creativity, worse service delivery and in the case of Safaricom here to big time fraudsters.

Vijana wetu wa Mulot are causing havoc. I think new MD need to be as strict as Bob Collymore. Any fraud should be instant firing.

Gov is conflicted. It owns Safaricom - and it source of huge patronage - and is also the regulator. Gov should sell it remaining 35 percent shareholding in Safaricom - and become a regulator.

Safaricom is hasoling in hasola economy. Even bigmouth economist will agree corruption not so bad, we are told. Accept and move on.
