Title: Failing to Understand an Opinion Poll
Post by: Omollo on September 19, 2014, 05:12:20 PM
This is a pre-mature poll that may only be useful when one is examining the track record of support and opposition to the referendum. Right now signatures are being collected and as I speak, OKOA Kenya and CORD have secured the numbers they need and are merely campaigning to increase the support base by having as many people as possible put their stake in the referendum.

So whether 54% oppose or support means absolutely nothing.

A majority of Kenyans are opposed to the referendum push by Cord and governors according to a survey done by Ipsos Kenya.

In the survey conducted in August, the opinion poll places the number of those opposed to the plebiscite vote at 54 percent of those interviewed.

The survey reports that a further 38 percent are in support of it while a further 8 percent are undecided. Those in support believe it will raise funding to counties while those opposed believe it is costly and has been politicized.

The opinion poll also found that the economic condition of over a half of the Kenya population has worsened in the last three months. According to the poll, slightly more than half of all Kenyans (52 percent) complain that their household economic condition has deteriorated in this period while one third of all households (31 percent) have someone who sometimes “goes to sleep hungry.”

The outcome of the study comes even as the Jubilee leadership has earned an increase in the level of approval of their performance over the last 3 months.

The study was done between August 24 and September 1, 2014, through face to face interviews across the country. A total of 2,021 respondents were sampled. The poll covered issues related to insecurity economic conditions, government performance and devolution and referendum.

President Uhuru Kenyatta's approval rating has increased by 10 per cent (from 32 percent then to 43 percent currently) with the respondents who indicated that they have “a lot of confidence” in him.

When asked to identify achievements of the Jubilee government so far, the proportion unable to mention any has remained the same (48 percent), with little change in the areas and ratings of best performance.

The poll shows that Kenyans identify the high cost of living and unemployment as the two most serious problems the country is facing today (33 percent and 15 percent, respectively). A clear majority (58 percent) indicate that the country is headed in the “wrong direction.”

“There is a clear political influence on this issue, with nearly twice as many CORD supporters holding this wrong direction view compared to their Jubilee counterparts (76 percent against 41percent),”says the poll.

The poll attributes these grim figures to the fact that nearly half of Kenyan households (47 percent) earn a total monthly income of Sh10,000 or less.

The figure varies significantly by region; from the the high in Nyanza (61 percent) to lows in Nairobi and North Eastern (33 percent and 22 percent).

It would appear that Margaret Ireri has never left the employ of kamwana express.  One can predict the direction that her polls will take while half asleep.

"Plebiscite" vote?! Did they really say that? That's a degrading social slur. Wow. Where are the results of this "plebiscite" vote?

Termie/Omollo: And we can predict the usual chorus after the usual defeat because as usual this crowd is out of touch with reality - Shall I help you...stolen elections, stuffed debes.

Omollo: I cannot help your handicap...It is not in my interest. Some us prefer 'you' in that position of denial because it works well to keep 'you' contained and defeated.  You Omollo are in that group of complicate individuals and parties and will all the time between polls or elections explaining numbers. Numbers don't need help silly! "So whether 54% oppose or support means absolutely nothing." I thought Raila's goal to win the ref! Is this not Tyranny of the Numbers caught you napping and dismissing opinion. This poll is telling you politely that CORD/OKOA ref is a waste of time.

I was just trying to be polite. In reality, you write gibberish that cannot be understood. Failing to understand rubbish is not a handicap. I would be glad to point out to you exactly how what you write is trash, mostly because of exceeding poor quality grammar.

Omollo: Be kind enough...as long as you understand that numbers do not need help. Between the rubbish of grammar and numbers, let's have a show down. My point to you and the crowd you represent is that you reject facts and end up defeated, in court or in the street....and whining until next time around. Perhaps you can help me put that in an editorial form.

When it comes to polls, it all depends on how the question is asked.  If they simply asked people "do you support a referendum", then those results maybe accurate.  However, if they asked people "do support more money to the counties" then there could be a dramatic shift in the numbers.  I believe that the trick for CORD is how they frame the referendum question and how they mount their campaign. CORD has a winning issue if they organize themselves right and become very disciplined in their massage and do not allow themselves to be distracted.  Message discipline is very important in a campaign.  It is amazing how CORD has been able to shape the referendum agenda without making Raila the issue as usual.  They have to keep on doing that.  Some Raila supporters like jakoyo and Orengo easily get distracted from the message but they have to be disciplined and keep on talking about Pesa Mashinani without distratraction.  Tell the people that all you want is more money for them so that they can plan and carryout their own county specific development plans.  That is a powerful message that Jubilee would be struggling to fight.

Another interesting poll:

One in every three Kenyan households has someone who sometimes “goes to sleep hungry” because they cannot afford a meal, a new study has revealed.

Most Kenyans also feel that things are generally going wrong, a finding which should get Jubilee strategists thinking about how to get their positive message out more and to ensure it is believed.

The report, which was released on Friday by Ipsos, showed that even salaried Kenyans were feeling the pinch as the cost of living rises and incomes stagnate.

The report shows that 43 per cent of Kenyans earn less than Sh10,000 while 31 per cent earn less than Sh25,000.

Only four per cent earn more than Sh40,000.

With 93 per cent of Kenyan adults earning Sh40,000 and below, the report confirmed a recent analysis by Standard Bank that estimated the number of low-income households in Kenya at 92 per cent.

High cost of living, insecurity and unemployment were cited in that order as the most serious problems facing the country.
